Ice damage-why wait till spring

Came up this morning to put out my bubblers and prepare the dock for winter. A bit windy but not to cold so I was enjoying this yearly ritual. Just a small amount of ice around the edges of the bay here in South Wolfeboro. Within a half hour of finishing, the bay completely froze over and the wind shifted. Wiped out the 3 piers that I just had installed this summer. Canopy on order for this spring but nothing left to attach it to. I don't understand how the ice could get so thick so fast that it could do such damage. Merry Christmas!

Having been here for all of it, it's what happens when you have a November/December stretch when the temp was rarely over freezing, starting with single digits on Thanksgiving, and many single digit days since then.
