Another Milestone

In the last 24 hours PhotoPost passed 3 million views! Thanks to all the great pictures (over 7400) contributed by site visitors this gallery is the largest and most popular collection of Lakes Region pictures available online.

Also this year the site celebrated its 10th anniversary online with a new hi-res WeirsCAM, a new more powerful server and major upgrades of the Forum and PhotoPost software.

Don

upthesaukee 11-29-2005 06:25 PM

Wow, Don, those are staggering numbers...3 million views, that is an average of 300,000 per year, which is over 800 views per day, or 34 per hour. Once every two minutes, someone is looking at a picture on your website. And those numbers are really skewed, because of the growth of the website in the last few years especially. Great job creating a place for us to post pictures and memorabilia of the wonderful area of the country we call the Lakes Region so that we and the rest of the WORLD can enjoy them.

And with what you have done this past year, I know that I am looking forward to see how you can improve near perfection !

Congratulations Don!

Pepper 11-29-2005 10:54 PM

Wow, those are staggering numbers indeed! I'm never ceased to be amazed at the wonderful improvements you make, and the incredible growth of the winniforum family!

Did you ever imagine ten years ago that this site would be the magnet it has become?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again ...

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
:D

Don,

My respect for what this site has become grows more each day. It's amazing what it takes, and your moderation has a lot to do with it. Despite the occasional issue, know that it's working and you are treading the right line.

Thanks!

Congratulations on the 3 million views! I am fairly new here and have enjoyed sharing my photos with the all the members and viewers. Everyone has been great!
Thanks Don for all that you do for this website. I have been learning as I go and reading all the forum messages I see how much you have put in time wise and money wise. What a large undertaking!!!! I was not fully aware of
your responsibility for such a great site.
Sincerly,
sonj

Thank you so much!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is the most amazing web site ever. For those of us who live here year 'round and call it "home", there is nothing to compare with the ability you give us to see what is happening, hear what others think, and post our views. I am a web master myself (other sites) and cannot imagine how you have the time to keep everything here running so smoothly...and still require no fees from the users! If there were an award I could give you, I would. For now all I can say is a huge
Congratulations
and
Many, Many Thank Yous!

exponential growth!

That's a million in just the last 6 months!

This is truly a world class site. Efforts of the Webmaster and some key contributors to the photoposts with interesting new and historic photos and post cards are truly to be commended.

Thanks so much for creating this "place". :)

Congratulations Don, This is and always has been a great site about our favorite lake. Looking forward to the future.

OK, I won't keep announcing each new million view level until maybe 10 million. That should happen late next year at the current rate. There have actually been even more PhotoPost views since the view counts of deleted photos are removed from the total.

Don

Boy, if you keep this up, Don, you're going to need an even BIGGER server!! :D

Don't worry Don, PhotoPost currently occupies about 3 GB on the server and I've got over 60 GB of free space remaining! :coolsm:

Don

Actually, it's kinda like the good news section on the local news...No bickering, disputing, or complaining...just plain good news.

Sooooooooooo, if every two months you want to tell us that we've got another million views, I'd welcome the good news. Besides, it's nice to see you post, and brag:D :D :D !!!

Congrats, Don.

Now 15 million!

The average of just under 5 million photo views a year seems to be holding. That's about 13,000 photo views a day, 365 days a year.

jeffk 11-01-2008 10:57 AM

or once every 6 seconds 24/7 ...WOW

That's great. Thanks for this site Don.

I have some curiosity questions.

Do you know how people get here?
What amount of traffic is direct to the site versus through a search engine?
If through a search engine are they specifically looking for Winnipesaukee information or "lake" pictures? i.e. what are the search words that get them here?

Just wondering.

mcdude 01-28-2009 06:16 PM

I agree wholeheartedly. Sunset Bob's (and mcdude's) fantastic pictures are a big reason that PhotoPost is such an amazing collection. We added another 1 million views in just the last few months. In 2005 I bragged about 3 million views and now we've topped 16 million. All the contributors are providing a valuable service by giving Internet users worldwide a glimpse of our favorite area.

I especially appreciate that Bob (and others) includes a descriptive title with his pictures. This is vitally important since the title and description provide the keywords that enable Google Images and other search engines to find and index the pictures. Once a picture drops off the 50 most current display or appears in the random forum display there is little chance anyone will see it again unless it can be found through a search. For example, all of Bob's recent parasailing pictures contain the word "parasail" and his sunset pictures contain the word "sunset". It seems obvious but so many pictures are posted with a title like "img_0001" or "Cool Shot" making me take the time to add a more descriptive title when I can. If the picture is of your dog in your boat make sure the title or description contain the word "dog" and "boat" and hopefully where and when it was taken. If you're showing off a picture of your Donzi make sure you include the word "Donzi" so people searching for pictures of Donzis will find it. I've nagged (sorry) about this before but it continues to be a big problem. At least 10 million of the 16 million current total views came from Google Images and other searches so the keywords are very, very important. I hope this also answers jeffk's question which I somehow missed until now.

Including descriptive titles, good descriptions and only posting pictures taken in the Lakes Region are 3 of the criteria I use when granting unlimited and unmoderated posting privileges.

Thanks again to all the contributors and especially to Bob who is quickly moving up the top 10 list! :coolsm:

upthesaukee 01-28-2009 11:58 PM

It is amazing how many people make it to this website...on the forum side, at about 11pm there are 117 guests looking at the forum.

As of 2/28/09, there are now 3,279 members, an increase of 76 in one month. Or, when projected over the whole year, nearly 1,000 new users per year! We'll have to see -- but that's a whole new area of growth for this website, and a sign of its ever increasing popularity.
