fuel prices
1 Attachment(s)
I was in Ft Lauderdale last week and noticed a tender filling up. He was there for a while so I took a look at the pump after he left.
It was said on the dock that this was just a tender for the larger boat. Attachment 17542 |

Yes, there were 4 Yammie 425hp engines @ around 40k each.

Under $5 / gallon...
So my neighbor picked up his boat for the season on Saturday and mentioned that the gas prices he saw at Irwin's and at Winnisquam Marine were both under $5 per gallon ($4.80-something). I was surprised they were that "low"

Here's the rundown. But many places haven't been updated since last fall. It's helpful if folks update their local prices.

Gas on the lake has always been ~$1 more a gallon, right?

~$1 more?
I agree with MeridethMan. Kinda Sorta. Gas at a marina is usually a different octane, so compare Granny Smith to Macintosh at least. And many marinas have an additive. And some places on the lake sell gas at a different price to members, different than what might be posted on Winnigas. Marinas also offer other services to gas customers for free, e.g. pump out, water. On the other hand, I don't tip anybody at a mainland gas station. At the marina, I tip when they bring me a bag of ice and a treat for my dog, help with dock lines, pump gas etc., etc.

 ..... There is always the option to lose the motor boat and go boating with a sailboat that has no engine and needs no gasoline. Sailboats as large as 17'-long by six or seven feet wide can sometimes be bought, used, for around one thousand dollars including a trailer and good quality sails. Sailing a sailboat with no secondary motor is very different than driving a motor boat capable to go 45-mph.
With the high price for gasoline, could be a good move to sell off the motor boat, and jibe into sailing. Left becalmed in a sailboat with NO wind ..... you get out the oars and start rowing or await a helpful motor boater to give you a tow, back home..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSj2bvKtDSQ ..... ..... hey there ...... ..... motor boater! Actor Chris Farley (1964-1997) is sitting in a Canada made, CL-14' dinghy, which sometimes show up on Craigslist for a relatively low price because it's old or a fixer-upper or some other reason, and it weighs 240-lbs and can get rowed with oars should Chris remain becalmed with NO wind ...... so ...... row CHRIS, row-row-row that CL-14 and lose your God-damned drugs issue and lose some weight so's the boat will weigh MORE than you, plus the boat does not do drugs, but you do ....... or you DID do drugs ... in the past. This CL-14' sailboat is a sturdy, well designed dinghy, made in Ontario, Canada and very capable for sailing on Lake Winnipesaukee with or without a secondary 2-hp pony motor and there's always a happy and helpful motor-boater around, out there, who will give you a tow back home when there is no wind. All the Lake Winnipesaukee motor-boaters basically have nothing better to do and just drive around the big lake in big fast boats in big circles, using up that VERY expensive gasoline. Isn't this correct, all you motor-boaters! ..... |
$1/gallon above 89 octane (midgrade) on land pumps is typically the average on the water. Some will be more, some will be less. Regardless, tip your gas attendant, they don't set the price but provide the service!
|
The gas at Mountain View is sold by Irwin and the profit goes to Irwin. About 4 years ago they started giving a discount to slip owners but prior to that everyone paid the same price.
Their contract with the Yacht Club limited the amount they could charge over their cost, at one time I think it was about 30 cents over their cost. Many times I tried to do the math but could never figure out how they arrived at the selling price. |
Gas prices are starting to be reported for 2022 via WinniGas.com
So far we're seeing prices on the lake from $4.59 per gallon to $4.99 per gallon. This is with just 8 out of 22 (as of today) gas docks having been updated. If you happen to see a price at any gas dock on the lake, please use WinniGas.com to report the price you see, even if you are not purchasing at the time. It doesn't hurt to enter the price of fuel, even if it's the same as currently shown on WinniGas. This helps to confirm to others that the price is still correct. If you work at a gas dock on the lake, please update your price of fuel each time a price change occurs, or if you would like some extra 'exposure', feel free to input the price weekly, even if the price hasn't changed. Please also check your 'station detail' (click on the name of the gas dock) to be sure that all the information is correct. You can use the 'Contact Us' feature to send a message or ask for help at any time. If you Like and Follow WinniGas on Facebook or Twitter, you will receive notifications any time a gas price is reported. |
Pier 19 was 5.40ish or 5.50ish yesterday when I took a quick look. Don't remember exactly. Not surprised as most everything is high there.
UPDATE: Pier 19 fuel is currently $5.65. |

Why not report these prices on WinniGas.com as it's very easy to do so? Try it yourself, you can't hurt anything!
Click on the name of a gas dock. Scroll to bottom to find the spot to enter a price Type in the current price Click to enter the price and you are done! Alternatively you can use the "Enter Price" menu Then select the name of the gas dock Type in the current price Press the "Enter Price" button, you're done! The date is automatically set for you, no need to touch it unless you want to report a price from couple of days ago, perhaps from a gas receipt that's in your pocket. I'm just curious as I try to make it as easy to use as possible. If you have any suggestions on how to improve it, or to make it easier to enter a price report, I'd love to hear about it! Thanks for any feedback. |

Many gas dock prices have not been updated for 2022. One stands out, WAM at $6.99/gal. Moving up the shore and around the lake I'm seeing $4.86 at MVYC and Irwin in Laconia, and others several cents under $5.00. Are these prices a blend of the latest delivery plus what was left in the tank, or does the price of the entire tank go up with the latest delivery? Is there an industry standard or common protocol?
Who's running WAM this year? Does Wolfeboro Corinthian YC give a discount to its members? |

It makes one wonder if it's a typo?
Usually someone will correct the price, or another user will update a price soon after, so typo's tend to be short lived. It is nice to see more reports coming in, but I'm sure we are all hoping that the prices will come down a bit more as the season gets going. |
Gas Prices Update?

Give it a couple weeks and I expect they'll be updated. |
Ouch!

I am fortunate in that I rarely if ever gas up at one of the gas docks. I mostly buy my gas at one of the local gas stations, filling one or two 14 gallon gas caddies with 87 octane (all my boat requires which saves even more money), and fill up at my dock. While not quite as convenient, I save in costs and can fill up on my schedule and don't have to worry about 'waiting on line'. |

Rafting Surge?
I would guess that most boaters would be looking for a cove to drop anchor for the day rather than motor around the lake - even more than in past years if the price of gas is ridiculously high.
Should be an interesting summer as if the prices do spike I would personally expect to see lots of large rafting sites versus people deciding to simply not boat... Time will tell - let's just hope for nice weather this summer - that would be enough for me. |
Not counting that $6.99 price at WAM, all the others seem to b e under $5.00, a couple of bucks more than last year. The delta is not huge compared to the total cost of boating. However, the total cost of slips, maintenance etc. is creeping up, in some places jumping up. I expect we'll see more threads about DIY.

..... remembering Breezy & Buddy from 1927
Gasoline is gasoline is gasoline, and nobody cares about the brand name, it's all about the price. Right now at $4.29/gal, buying gasoline in Meredith, Laconia and Gilford is probably priced the highest, ever-ever-ever, like right now on May 1, 2022.
Paying a wee bit above sixty dollars at the Meredith Irving to pump 14-gallons into the little Subaru was totally NO FUN but at least the lastest LaDaSun is included with that purchase. You know there's some very historical old photos inside that Meredith Irving that show an old Ariens snow roller with two guys and two horses attached ...... NO gasoline required ...... just hay, feed and water ...... to power up both BREEZY and BUDDY for pulling that large snow roller for flattening down the snow. Betcha that led it to some wicked icy roads, later on. Did you know that gasoline cost something like eight cents/gal in 1927 ..... a fast 95-years, one lifetime ago. |
Three WAM prices entered yesterday, all different.

Multiple same price reports don't really hurt anything, but may help to provide confidence that a price is valid. The latest reported price is always listed via the "Gas Docks" menu selection, and makes an assumption (right or wrong) that the most recently reported price is the one of interest. But the running price history is shown the "Price History" menu selection. Sometimes an errant price is just a typo, and usually is corrected, either by the original person or by another user in a short amount of time. WinniGas (like most web software, such as this forum, etc.) does record the IP address of a user and can be used if a problem crops up. This is not a perfect system, but it has been working for several years. I'm happy to accept any and all suggestions for consideration for improvements. Edited to add: Crazy errant prices can now be easily removed. ;) |

Parking an unused car outdoors for more than a week is asking for trouble. Mice will move into the engine area and the interior, attracted by residual road salt absorbed onto vinyl electric wires and silicone car parts, unless you have a pet cat patrolling the area.

I think you may see the marinas squeeze their margins.
There is too much to be lost elsewhere from the fuel prices being too high compared to the convenience. |
Picked up the boat for the season yesterday. Stopped at WoW in the Weirs channel for gas. $5.69 / gallon...not bad...I recently paid $5.40 for premium at an Irving in Bedford. The price that DID shock me was $10 for two relatively small bags of chips in their store!:laugh:

E15 on the Lake?
Quote:
Unfortunately I believe all gas sold on the lake is E10. I certainly remember the hue and cry when the changeover to E10 took place. A lot of boats had all kinds of issues with it, mine included. |
https://www.politifact.com/factcheck...jority-vehicl/
The lack of E15 has very little to do with auto manufacturers. |
|
He can only do it with a temporary waiver... and not even sure that it would hold should the SCOTUS have to rule on the issue.
We have high prices, but I'm not sure that constitutes an ''emergency'' within the executive powers. |

Boat traffic this weekend
Is it our imagination, or was there less boat traffic this weekend? Usually it’s pretty hectic out there, but at this end of the lake it was mild for a holiday weekend.

We went from Gilford to Pop's for lobster rolls on about noon Sunday. Excellent! The boat traffic was a little lighter than usual for a weekend. The wait for a dock in Alton was about 5 minutes. An hour later there were only two boats waiting for docks.
We went through the Weirs Channel about 2 PM and the boat traffic exiting Paugus Bay was the heaviest and slowest I have ever seen it. When heading back out we sat in 5 wide traffic in front of Pier 3 condominiums for about 15 minutes, only moving about 50 feet. The enlargement of rack storage and the addition of condominiums and boats will only increase the daily boat traffic from Paugus Bay out to the main lake. North Water Marine boat traffic entering the mess into the Channel only made Sunday's jam up worse. As that facility grows the problems will only continue to grow. |
It didn't help that on Sunday there was a group playing with water guns right in the channel - a lot of boats were stopping to engage with them when headed out

So which vehicles are currently under warranty that manufacturers are warning about? |
Skelley approaches $5
Today’s price for regular gas up from $4.69 to $4.95.
|
Not Quite
Quote:
"Automakers did not start including E15 as an approved fuel in owner’s manuals and warranty statements until 2012, the year E15 was first sold commercially." Not all vehicles were approved for E15 then. That's when the automakers started approving it, and it wasn't an across the board approval. My 2014 RAM 1500 isn't approved for E15. It is still under warranty. My 2004 F150 isn't approved for E15. (It is no longer under warranty, obviously.) |
Manufacturer listed the 2014 RAM 1500 as 5yrs/100K.
Did you get a third party extended warranty? I have a 2016 Accent... but even that warranty is only good for a few more cycles; and it is doubtful that all the stations in the area would switch over before then. The outcry on the E15 was smog; an issue not likely to go away. And very few stations are willing to switch over in areas that see lots of summer sales due to the fact that an executive order only covers a few months and may never happen again. Since there are no other options at the federal level, pipelines are full... refineries are running at record levels... President Biden may go for the Jones Act in the fall; but other than that - demand destruction. That is what I, and I would presume others, keep our eyes on as a pricing signal to stop investing in futures and industry stocks. The ycharts show that the US is still exporting record NG and hit a new record crude export for the week of April 15th breaking the previous record net export date of April 10th, 2020 by about 600K barrel per day. It bounced around a bit but even on the latest May 27th report the US exported 1,4M bpd for that week. With numbers like those... the President is going to look toward any option that he has. |

I think if it keeps going up the way it has then there should be plenty of boat parking available at the town docks around the lake....... |

If I cruise at 1000-1200 rpm, I barely use any fuel and probably won't need to buy more this year. If I push the throttles, it could be 30+ gph, but that won't last long before we hit shore. Not like deep sea fishing runs. |

Well based on these videos I think we have now reached the point where they are going to need to register and regulate these "paddle craft" I see big potential revenue streams from this, and especially with all the tickets for safety violations. First thing is to form a concerned citizens coalition to demand safety regulation and tracking (read registration) Then we need some dedicated watchdog citizens to make sure these people are not playing loud music on their iPods/Phones or paddling too close to shore or docks, and god forbid they form rafts as we just cannot have that. No, best to just ban them in coves and any part of the lake where people own waterfront property. If you dont deal with this now, the lake will be swarming with these destroyers of the environment. I can only imagine what foul aquatic plants they are bringing from other bodies of water, and all the urination that will be going on as none of them has a head,,, The lake will be yellow by summers end if someone doesnt take swift action on this atrocity! The humanity,,, |
We're at 121 and have to get to 147 to set a record... and that wouldn't even be adjusted for wage inflation.
|
Winnigas.com seems to be fairly up to date with postings from last weekend all around the lake. I'd have to say that $9.99 at West Alton Marina is perhaps in error. Otherwise, the thing that stands out is that the east side of the lake seems to be consistently higher than the Walmart side.
|
I see that even on the roads.
Belmont Irving is cheaper than New Hampton. I think management has determined where the tourists are. |
Just dropped $400 at Lakeport Landing @ $5.79/gal

It won't go down.
The refiners are pushing 95% capacity utilization. There is a much better chance now that something bad will happen to one or several of them causing an even higher surge. For the week of June 10th, the US had net exports of 1.3M bbl/d. The US refiners just can't handle any more. The US lost about 1M bbl/d of refining capacity in 2019/2220, and it isn't likely to see those refiners come back online for years... if ever. |
It will be interesting to see what happens when the refiners experience a major Hurricane this year......
Not a good image for anyone. |
