Running on Generator
 

....Lost power here in Bedford about 6:30 this morning, and running off the generator right now as I write this. We have underground power in this neighborhood, so I guess one of the feeder lines went down. Odd, though, because even though it's windy, it's not that windy here....

Went out and did some errands around noon and became aware of the power outage in the weirs. My lights have been blinking must of the day, just lost power. Good lord willing we are out of here at 10am tomorrow morning. Unsure if I need to drag the generator out. On the plus side, wrapping presents by candle light. Most of the cooking is done.

Looks like the BearCam .... www.bearchow.com ..... has done gone black ...... must have lost island power, or some-ting?

And, where's all the deep snow? My place is about two miles south, and I was raking the leaves off the ground on Thursday, Dec 22. Made what was probably the last dump run with a trailer load of dry oak leafs till next spring. Me-thinks the remaining leaves will be frozen in place until late March/early April but you never know.

Wildwood Village utilities are underground. Two different feeders. One off Lexington Drive and the other off Lynnewood. Both have separate power feeds. Been lucky in the past 2 decades.

All day yesterday and last night we had up and down power failures here in Laconia off Parade Rd.

They were never long enough to require the generator but I proactively flipped the breakers on a few items that have fancy electronics in them.

There was a weird occurrence as well.

At one point about half of our stuff quit but all else was working.

I figured it was due to the loss of one leg of the incoming power and that the outage items were on that leg in the breaker panel.

We contacted Eversource but they said there were no know outages in my area.

Down the street there was a crew working on a power poll that was snapped in half so I figured it was work in progress.

But a quick glance at the panel revealed that all of the breakers with white buttons were tripped.

I reset them and we were back in action.

My experience with this type of breaker is that they are a ground fault interrupter.

Maybe the up and down or the power crew's work tripped them.

I was also wondering if they were arc fault breakers.

The house was built in 2010 and I do not know if arc faults were required then.

Do they have a button or do they just trip like a traditional breaker?

Power out since 6pm last night over here in Moultonborough on the Center Harbor line. No idea when it will be restored. Just got my generator running last Friday. Working great so far.

We were at Shaw's in Gilford about 9:45 am today and they were running on generator. While the store was fully open for business, the lighting was a bare minimum and the heat was off. We had winter coats on and were fine but the staff were a bit cold.

What's your genny's power source, propane or NG? I'm wondering how long you can be disconnected before running out of fuel.

Propane…I have a 500 gallon tank. I believe my 20 KW generator uses around 3 gallons per hour or 72 gallons a day.

Pine Island out
 

Still running on generator here on Pine Island, walked the power lines and one spur line to a house is down, but other than that everything looks to be intact. It looked like from the NHEC outage map that quite a bit of Meredith Neck is out and hoping that when that is fixed the island will come back on-line!

Heading back to the mainland tonight, lots of skim ice near the shores and since I'm bringing the cocktails to the Christmas party tomorrow, I'd hate to be iced in on the island and have to drink it all myself hahaha

We didn't, either, which is weird given how many around us did.

When we moved into town, we'd lose power if a mouse farted, but since ~2016 it's been much more reliable. Probably around the time Eversource took down a ton of roadside trees.

I'm doing the 25 hour, 1st oil change around 7 tonight. Will probably be brisk out there.

Ours went down around 5pm last night and just came back on.
Hopefully you too since you aren’t that far from us.

Ours just came back after 24 1/2 hours down!

LSP was the same. Ran up yesterday noon with a small generator to get the sump pump working on the 9" of water in the basement. Maybe now my dad will put a backup battery on it? It was about 20 years before we lost power for more than 2 hours, now it's happened a few times in the last 3-4 years.
Everyone was safe and that's what counts.

Just got ours back after 52 hours. Shut the generator off and the house was 70 degrees. Left to visit the grandchildren. 28 hours later we got the power back and the house was 51 degrees. That’s a positive after all the work we did last winter. Wood stove is now going and the clocks are all reset. Fingers crossed we go another 8 years before the next multi day loss of power

Got mine back around 930 today. The generator ran for 35 hours. I estimate about 40 gallons of propane burned, but that could be off.

Two trees came down about 5pm Friday night, about 1/2 mile from me. We had to go out so decided to just bundle up for the night, when we got back.

For the first time since I got it in 2010, my big genny wouldn't start even though it seemed ok on my pre-season equipment check. The apparent problem was no spark. I decided to not take time for it now and made a dash for Harbor Freight and got there at 925am Saturday. All they had left were 2000w inverter portables.

Since I was told my new furnace should only use clean power, I blessed my luck (and stifled my disappointment they wouldn't sell me one of the bigger floor models). The only issue was the diagram and instructions aren't quite right on where the oil plug is. If you get one, it's on the opposite side from the pull start.

The unit started right up and after the house was hot, I switched the line from the furnace (transfer switch) to my two refrigerators using a tap (heavy duty cords and tap).

I am happy with this item and may not bother to get a bigger unit even if I can't fix my old Chicago unit.

Many thanks to Clean Harbor for hazmat cleanup from the transformer that was involved and the line crews that got my lights on around midnight.

When I first bought my house, lost my power for over a week for 3 years in a row. My brother in law had the Honda 2000 portable. We ran the hot air furnace and the frig together without any issue. All depends on how big of a furnace of course. But worth looking into the specs of both to see if you could run both at the same time.

Thanks for the suggestion and comparison. I have 2 full size fridges (1 dumb and 1 'smart') and a bar fridge. I may try the furnace and smart fridge together because my wife is addicted to crushed ice with Pepsi, and tag team the furnace with the dumb fridge. The bar fridge can be left alone since we seldom put anything perishable in it.

We run our boiler, fridge, power strip for battery recharge as well as cell phones, plus a nice LED light on the kitchen island and one on the second floor, all with our Honda 2000 ! Works perfect. Have a male receptacle on the outside of the house that i plug the generator feed into, then this feed goes to a double wall receptacle. Does everything we need except well pump that is 220. In the late fall, we leave three 5 gallon pails filled with water in our bathtub for flushing should the lake be frozen. Love my Honda...runs terrific with nice clean power and uses little gas. Did a little creative wiring in my boiler room and now it takes me 10 seconds to convert from house power to generator power. When power comes back, it again only take 10 seconds to remove the generator feed and go back to house power. Used to open up wire boxes and splice into a extension cord...not practical.
