Today’s Eclipse
Pretty awe-inspiring to witness today in Meredith. Watching the moons shadow eclipse the sun in the manner it did was pretty cool. I had thought the eclipse would have passed from lower right to upper left, but it didn’t.

Darkness to traffic
Someone said "3 minutes of darkness for 7 hrs of traffic" about sums it up:)

Drove from Moultonboro to Northumberland NH this morning. about 3 hours to get up there, 2.5 hours to return. Well worth seeing the total eclipse. When the final sliver of light disappeared, it was like someone turned off the light. The there was the red sliver of light at the bottom of the disc and Jupiter. It was awesome.

Twice in a lifetime
I drove the four hours (took almost six) from home up to North Stratford, in between Lancaster and Colebrook. The folks there were so friendly and I watched with dozens of locals and a few fellow flatlanders. Totality is amazing and TV does not do it justice, just takes your breath away - the darkness above and on the ground; 360 degrees of dusk on the horizon; the silvery corona. WOW!
Side note, I went to South Carolina in 2017 and saw that one too. Equally incredible, both of them. I hope to get the chance to see another, and hope everyone gets the chance to see totality some day if they haven't yet. And yes...I drove the four hours (took seven) back home. It was so bad trying to leave there, I turned around and ended up going north and east, above the Whites, US-2 to 16 back to Mass. Back and neck pain today? WORTH IT! Cheers, JR |

Colebrook, NH state liquor store parking lot which had 3X the number of cars it was designed for. It took about 1 hr 10 min for the shadow to go from a nibble to full coverage of the sun. Then about 3 min of totality. Once in a lifetime for us, totally worth the effort.

Thanks for all the feedback and pics of everyone’s experiences! found the following site that lets you simulate what the eclipse would have looked at based on your location. https://eclipse2024.org/eclipse_cities/statemap.php (Wish I had thought to google for a tool like this ahead of the eclipse!)
I put in “Meredith, NH” and the simulation shows both the sun and moon setting at the same time, offering a super accurate depiction of what I observed from my location. |

Regret no going!
I had plans to go see totality in the Burlington, VT area but had to change plans at the last minute - with school testing starting Tuesday morning I couldn't be out Monday:(
It was cool where I was but regret not being able to see totality. Maybe it's time to start making plans to go to Iceland! My kids were there and said it was a great experience - glad they were able to see it even if I couldn't! |

Panorama of Darkness

We went to Derby, VT, five miles from Canada, eh, arriving in a Shaw's Parking lot with minutes to spare. When it was time, I launched a drone and shot a video of the totality happening, a few stills and then this 360° panorama of the darkness.
On the trip home, we made the tactical error of going through Franconia Notch. By 7PM, we were within five miles of the notch and by 12:15AM, we had reached the Cannon Mtn parking lot, stopped and spent the nite in a camper. I've seen three partial eclipses before but this was a whole different experience. Three and a half minutes never went by so quickly. The whoops from the crowd at the moment of totality made it extra special. Totally worth it. |
