Hummingbirds 2024
 

Hello all. I put out my feeder on Sunday, April 28th. The feeder is next to my chair in the living room, and I hadn't seen neither hide nor hair of my hummingbirds. Until now....May 2nd.
First hummingbird of the year just made a fly-by at around 3:40pm and then stopped for a drink. It just made another swing by as I am typing this.

I just came here to say the same thing! I put the feeder out a week ago but didn't see any hummingbirds until today. One male hummingbird arrived a little after noon; he must be heading north.

The wave must be starting. My feeders have been up for 2 days. Just had my first visitor a few minutes ago.

Had our first today in Wolfeboro .

Feeders have been up for a week. I also had my first visitor yesterday. It's the first time ever that the first hummingbird of the year that I saw was a female.

I started tracking the migration a few days ago and the closest I had found to Alton was in Barnstead. It took a few days for them to get to my place, but it appears they are here.

I have seen one buzzing around my Azalea bush and am waiting for my Rhododendrons to open up.

We had our first, a male at our feeder yesterday, 5/02

Our first arrived April 30th (compared to May 8th last year). We now have seen two, competing for the feeder (although we have two, one in front and one in back) as usual.

They finally got to Welch, usually a week after UP's place. Some fighting going on.

Hmm…time to drag the feeders up from the basement!

The boys are back...
 

The boys are back. At least two at a time, and possibly a third, are buzzing around our feeder. For the first time, I have seen the flash of red on the throats.

Makes you wonder if they have ever hear "Can't we all just get along?". :laugh:

I put a feeder in the front and in the back to hopefully cut down on the squabbling. Unfortunately, once they get into "fight" mode, that's all they know. When they are calm, they use both feeders. But if they happen to both show up at the same feeder, "Game's on!". The arial dive bombing and the audible cry puts on quite a show. Both feeders are in front of windows so we have prime seats.

They also have their "watching perch" to keep an eye on the food source. In the front, it's the lilac bush. In the back, it's the clothes line. We have had 4 birds (sometimes even non hummingbirds) sitting on the clothes line and that's cool. Let one of them move to the feeder (unless it's the boss or a favored female) and they get shooed away. It's harder to see them in the lilac bush. The watcher is usually there but the wannabes are usually in nearby trees.

Amazes me every year how much energy they waste squabbling with each other. Plenty of feeders and ports but I watched 3 of them go at each other for more than 30 minutes.

Hummingbirds
 

We have a lot of Green Hummingbirds, which as i read are rare in this area. They are desert Hummingbirds. Last year we had a few of them also. The Ruby Throated are also here. Sometimes we see two sitting next to each other on the feeder. Quite a sight. There are distinct actions or markings, so we are able to tell which one is feeding. Love it when they come to the window to apparently thank us.

I just saw that. The green ones we are seeing however, have a black head instead of green. Does that make a difference.

I just did a review of Peterson Field Guide. Can’t find a black headed/crowned hummingbird with a range anywhere close to NH. Most are in northern Mexico and the southwest.

The other day, I happened to notice a cute little guy sitting on the feeder looking up and down and all around like they do…I realized I let the sugar water run out as I was busy doing other projects around the house. I quickly refilled them. But he was so cute! 🥰 hope he gets some “weight” on for his migration!

Have Male Hummers Headed South?
 

After a very active summer with both male and female hummingbirds visiting our feeder daily, for the past week we haven't seen a single male hummer. Still lots of female activity, but no males. We know the males typically head south before the females, so we're wondering if anyone else has noted a recent lack of males at their feeder?

Yesterday
 

I saw two males yesterday at my place. They were playing chase the neighbors away.

We have seen only females recently however, a male has been here the last couple of days. The males tend to migrate earlier. We speculate this male came from further north and is just hanging out for a couple days. We call such hummingbirds "travelers".

Recently
 

Two days ago, I was in the kitchen when a female came to the feeder then came over to the window. Now, this happens all the time, however, this time she came up to within an inch of the window. So, I am thinking maybe she is saying so long till next year. Don't think so, as there was a yellow tomato on the windowsill. She was checking out that tomato. Also, had a male at the window by the kitchen table come over and danced around for a while. He is still here today/ Nature is amazing.

Still no male hummers here since my 8/25/24 report. We have had a daily stream of females, though. Won't be long, I think, when they'll go south as well.

Still getting the occasional female at my feeders. But numbers and frequency are noticeably down.

Posted too soon. Shortly after posting there were 4-5 hummers swooping on my feeders.

As they say, all good things must come to an end.

I saw a hummingbird last Saturday late afternoon. I haven't seen one since. I was hoping to see one or two in the past few days, but alas, I have not seen one. Time to bring in the feeders, clean them, and get ready for next May. Adios!

Our last travelers were on the 11th and 12th. We are taking the feeders down Sunday, the first day of Fall.

Took ours down today…
