What sound do you most associate with your lake house?

A haunting loon call at night is what I consider to be the most predominant sound I correlate to the lake house. All the other sounds are more less available where I live away from the lake.

Loons would be my first thought, but in the last four years, it's been the back-up beeps of construction vehicles from my new neighbors mega-mansion build.

Absolutely. Across the lake. A single bobcat tractor working in a yard alone. Why can’t they shut off that beep when on the job alone?

But I Salute The Importance of Sound as Described Here...

I've got two freshwater lake houses. While the one in Florida does have Loons in winter, they make no sounds.

Although the lake is more than a mile across, nearly 100% developed, there's very little in the way of boats and their attendant noises. (And no cigar smoke--probably the most insulting affront to the senses upon the lake).

There's an unmistakable noise of the State's airboat as he cruises monthly distributing tablets of some kind into the lake.
Last weekend, there was the dreaded 2-stroke Jet-Ski. :fire: (Fortunately, a rare sound, and only one).

The occasional weekend GFBL (ocean-racer) boat makes a lap around my Florida lake, but because the lake is round, one lap is as much as they'll do. ;)

Winter on Winnipesaukee can drive you crazy with no sounds whatsoever. (Except to make your ears ring trying to seek a sound). :eek2: However, the pressue-cracking of thick ice is an awesome sound.

In Spring, it's always the calls of the American Robin that dominate the forest's birdsong environment.

Bald Eagles, Cormorants, and Turkey Vultures are mostly silent. Ospreys will make loud chirping.

Then on Thursdays, there are duelling leaf blowers. :rolleye2:

During bike week: motorcycles. If you're on the dock, you can hear motorcycle groups--where and when they stop and start up again

In Summer, it's the crashing of waves on the shoreline, and the soaking of dock. :rolleye1:

All that said, I voted for Loons--as I've learned what they're saying--and they're the only truly captivating sounds in my environment.

:look:

Thank you for a tremendous description!

The poll allows up to ten choices for sounds, but there really are a handful more. One night on the beach in pitch black darkness, I made a short video of the crackling sounds of the campfire and the loons in the background. I just thought that was the coolest prehistoric experience.

Crickets = Frogs = Cicadas...

"Crickets" should include "Frogs", as their calls are frequently mistaken for one another.

Some seasons, frog calls can be overwhelming during daylight hours, when Loons are generally quiet. (Except when Ultralight aircraft and Bald Eagles appear over the treeline).

Cicadas are in that same grouping as crickets and frogs, too.

The tree toads are very loud this year.

"camp" sounds

"camp" sounds, no lake houses on my island:
Chain saws

Nostalgia--I miss the rumble of the old Mount Washington Enterprise (?) engines.
Kids in 12' boats with 2 cycle engines going endlessly back and forth because they weren't allowed to go out of sight of their camp.

Does this question pertain to when my wife is at home or away?

Unfortunately, they can't shut it off because of the small chance a random pedestrian wanders on to the property and gets run over by the machine, resulting in a massive lawsuit. 'Tis the reality. Hope the project is over soon so loons and waves take over ... !!!

Diana 06-06-2024 03:02 PM

The horn of the mailboat approaching the mail dock, the kids scrambling for ice cream money.

TiltonBB 06-07-2024 04:48 AM

The loud stereos of the wakeboats with the high mounted speakers designed to blast music outside the boat and across the lake.

The Real BigGuy 06-07-2024 08:47 AM

The creaking as the camp structure heats up in the morning and cools down at night.

Yup. Lawyers see to have done more to change this world than any other profession.

Also, OSHA requires the alarm on all job site heavy equipment & motor vehicles.

The signal and flashing light help with work site safety, and lower our workers' compensation insurance.

Easy to say. Please post if your worker's comp costs have decreased because of OSHA. If not, don't post.

John Mercier 06-09-2024 07:54 PM

Worker's Comp costs increase with claims.
The beeping and flashing warns nearby employees that the machine is backing, and that the operator may be unaware of their location relative to the machine.

Unfortunately insurance being what insurance is... the industry rate is partially set by the whole. So some acting without regard to safety increases the costs to all.

The insurance industry that supplies worker's comp coverage has laid out its value.

Are you stating the insurance companies are being deceptive? Or is it the State of NH that through its Legislature and Governors office have imposed and sustained laws requiring worker's comp insurance are being deceptive?

Did you mean INCREASED because of OSHA?:laugh:

John Mercier 06-10-2024 08:39 AM

Worker's Comp should not increase with OSHA-compliance according to the insurers and the State of NH.

You may be experiencing fines for repeated failure to comply... and I can imagine that an insurer having the knowledge would take it into consideration.

And what sound does this make when visiting the lake??:offtopic:

Definitely a loon call. Our house isn’t on the lake but not too far from it

Sitting by a crackling campfire when it's pitch black and a loon calling in the background is a magical prehistoric feeling! The Native Americans must have loved it too.

I would choose “silence” first. But thats not included in poll? So I’ll go with Loons…

Silence would have been a worthy choice in the poll. Sleeping at the lake is so much more peaceful than back home.

The sound of a pen writing checks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MV Mt Washington

I miss the sound of the old Mt Washington diesel engines, chugging along.
