Garmin castable sonar
 

My grandson is looking at a Garmin Castable sonar fish finder. I see one at $130 and another with GPS at $180. He is 14, fishes mostly from a 13' Boston Whaler on Winni and on Cape Cod. Does anybody have related experience?

I have no experience with this product but wonder why it exists.

My inclination would be to cast a lure rather than a sonar device.

The cheapest fish/depth finder at Walmart is actually cheaper than that device.

For a little more money, a wireless submersible device is available that detects edible fish species, chases after the biggest one (at any depth) and, if the target fish has revealed a low mercury signature, spears it for you.

Although I have no experience with a castable device, I think your grandson's money may be better spent on an inexpensive fishfinder for the boston whaler.
