Ice Conditions Around Bear Island?
Hi!
My husband and I are heading-up to the area on Friday and are considering crossing to check on our camp on Bear Island. Does anyone know what the ice conditions in that area are currently? Safe or not safe? Thank you!!! Belinda |
north end is fine...
We hiked out on Saturday to Pine Island and made a detour to the north end of Bear to check on the power (or lack of). The ice is fine around there (at least for walking)...
Enjoy!! PIG |
Power still out on Bear?
We lost power on Mink two Fridays ago when the big blow went through. I worried the Co-op wouldn't get to restoring island power -- perhaps even 'til ice-out. Hoping that with all of the full time residential power restored they'll make the effort. A neighbor of mine had a tree fall on the line connecting his house and even though I reported it in November, the lines were still on the ground two weeks ago -- and their permanent dock has a new S-curve since their ice-eater hasn't run all winter and the ice has been shifting around....
Guess I need to plan to bring out more gas for the generator.... |
Just spoke to NH Electric Co-op
The linemen are out on Bear today working to restore power to the islands in that area.

That's great news Mink Islander, thanks!

Bear Cam
So will your Lakecam come online automatically once power is restored or do you have to manually reboot? Just wondering if you Cam coming up again will confirm when the power's back.
|
The CAMs should come right back up when power is turned on. In fact I have them on a time clock that kills power for one minute every night at 9PM.
Every now and them the CAMs will hang, or lockup, and need to be rebooted, just like with computers. The time clock power cycles them every day to prevent a hang from lasting weeks or months. |
You're back up!
Fresh images on the ice-in watch page!

The ice is good except a few places with shallow water. I went around Bear Island today on skis. There is some dock damage from the ice.
Spending the night on the island and it looks like I have the lake to myself. |

Beware of Thin Ice
Another snowmobiler's life lost today for what.... Those "stupid" fisherman driving trucks on the ice too lazy to walk!!!
Don't depend on others news reports of "safe ice" regardless when you venture out. There are many different areas and reef's as compared to previous years. Some areas may only be 2-3 inches thick. If you don't know how to read the ice visually, you shouldn't be out there. Also keep in mind there is little snow on the ice for liquid cooled sleds. Going on the ice the remainder of this season is taking your life in your own hands. Although the temps are cold and building ice now, warmer weather is on the way. There is so much open water with wave and white cap activity. Add the winds and watch the ice break up and or shift. :) |
Well, Obviously No Crossing To Bear For Us!
I took one look at the ice at Cattle Landing Friday morning and told my husband there was absolutely no chance we were going to cross. We heard about the snowmobiler falling through Satuday morning when we visited our marina. We drove around the entire lake (that was our "Plan B" -- dining and shopping around the towns instead of our hike) and we were amazed by the amount of open water. What a crazy winter we've had!
