Feel good story

Two friends cleaned up messes made by hordes of tourists in the White Mountains. Leaf peepers were out en masse, and some of them didn’t bother to pick up their own mess….so these two took it upon themselves to straighten things out. Bravo! Two good citizens who didn’t want anything out of this but restoring the beautiful surroundings. This story made me smile and forget all the negative news. Look it up on WMUR.

It's so sad that "Doing the Right Thing" is newsworthy.

Sad, that so many people who love the beauty of New Hampshire will leave trash behind without giving it a second thought. Thankfully, we have people like this that will clean up their messes.

It is sad

Our Masonic Lodge has been doing the Adopt-a-highway program in Alton on Route 11 eastbound from the Alton Circle to the New Durham town line.

Depending on how good (or bad) people have been, in the two miles of highway we will fill around 20-25 of those light blue bags you see along highways that participate in the program. That's 75 to 90 bags of trash in a year!

It is sad.

I had similar thoughts when...

...we were caught in southbound traffic on 93 Monday as leaf peepers were departing NH early due to the rainy weather. We crawled for many miles behind a driver that smoked no fewer than three cigarettes...tossing each spent butt on the roadway.

Other than being clueless, why do people do this?

probably because there are no more ashtrays in cars... not that this is any excuse for using the world as their ashtray...

The cigarette one drives me bonkers as well, but I'm an avid hiker who is usually in the woods at least twice a month, and the trails are almost always spotless.

Those are not the tourist trap trails like Artist's Bluff, but I think it's important to make the distinction between the one or two places that get overrun and the other 99.9% that are pristine.

Probably the same reason people in boats flip their butts into the lake. Unfortunately, I don’t know the reason but, I remember when smoking was allowed in most public spaces I used to see people drop their butts in stores and grind them out on the floor. I often wondered if they did that at home.
