Sinking
 

Just heard that a Mastercraft boat with 7 people on board got swamped in the wind and went down near Locke's Island. All were rescued safely from the water...none were wearing life preservers.

Before a tow boat could make it out there, the boat completely sank...

It is also being reported that someone jumped off a boat north of Diamond to retrieve something and never surfaced. My wife can see it from the house; there are 3 boats looking just south of Diamond now. An aerial search is being mentioned, but no helicopter in sight now.

Heartbreaking for a young kid to lose his life like that.

On the Mastercraft--I did not realize that a modern boat could sink. I thought they filled them with so much foam that the gunwales would be at the surface. I hope someone can educate me here

It's so sad. A Mastercraft with four young men went by here yesterday headed out but I was glad to see in a few minutes they returned. Glad they were smart enough to do that..

Sad news from the lake
 

Apparently the body of the young man was recovered last night around 7 P.M. My heart breaks for him and for his family. Life will never be the same for them. Tomorrow will mark 4 years since we lost our son unexpectedly. He was 54, smart, successful, and left a wonderful wife and our three almost perfect grandchildren. Anyhow, this sad story isn’t about us….it’s about that poor young man who sadly and unexpectedly lost his life yesterday and his grieving family.

People, especially young men, will overestimate their swimming ability for swimming by jumping from a boat into 63-degree water with big waves present.

63-degree water temp is warm enough to slowly wade out into the lake, but cold enough to make you gasp and inhale water when jumping into it. That's because you test the water with your legs when wading and slowly get used to it, or decide to turn around and get out.

So, how does this drowning happen? It makes me think about covering the nose and mouth with your hand should you fall or jump into cold water to prevent inhaling water and then tough out the intense cold water.

This 17 year old ..... Ian Blake ..... looked like a strong athletic type in his photo, plus he was on the Nashua football team and he jumped or dove into the water from a boat and never came back up, or something like that.

So, what was the water temp on June 20, 2025 between Diamond and Rattlesnake Islands? Maybe 65-66-67 degrees which is cold but not too deadly cold. 65 is swim-able for me with a foam noodle swim belt for swim safety plus a thin neoprene vest and an O'Neill Thermo top that helps a lot to keep the heat in the chest area.

The Lake Winnipesaukee surface water temp usually gets up to 70-degrees on July 1 to July 4, in time for the Independence Day holiday.

Then again, a whole lot of people are poor swimmers or non-swimmers, but jumping into 65-degree water into wavy, cold June 20, 2025, Lake Winnipesaukee can be more challenging than you may think.

N.H. should require a 440-yard (quarter mile) open deep water, Lake Winnipesaukee swim test to get a N.H. boater's license. This would raise the level of N.H. boater's swimming ability. In July 1964 at age-12 I had to take a quarter mile swim test following a small row boat at Camp Alton in order to go water skiing.

But, if he had taken a foam noodle along for the jump it could have made the difference between death by drowning and not having a sinking problem. Foam noodles really are good swimming aids, especially when a wee bit drunk, and can be thrown like a spear for 30-feet.

Rough water
 

June 20,2025 was one of the roughest days I've ever seen on Lake Winnipesaukee. We intended to take the grandchildren out in our boat. It was so rough, we took them to Ellacoya beach instead. Even a very strong swimmer would have a tough time that day.
