14-Year-Old Work Options (Moultonborough)

My daughter is 14 and is looking to get a job of some kind this summer at the lake. Given we'd need to drive her, it would need to be somewhat close to Arcadia Campground/Moultonborough Neck Road.

Any thoughts of who might hire that age in that area?

I'd try Trexler's and The Boro. But if memory serves--it's really tough to predict at that age/level. Best is for her to walk into every possible place with a smile and ask to speak with the manager. Keep us posted!

TomC 06-10-2026 03:39 AM

How about Jojos?

thinkxingu 06-10-2026 04:31 AM

We'd thought about JoJo's, but they say 16+.

Trexler's and The Boro are good suggestions, but Flying makes a good point that it might just be worth a drive from camp to see what we come across.

how about starting a babysitting biz? I would think there are plenty of weekenders/vacationers who want to go out for dinner (or whatever) and need a sitter for a couple of hours. Possibly plenty of opportunity right at Arcadia, likely with people you know/acquaintances - important since you would need to vet clients before you sent your 14 yo over to a stranger's place...

Market Basket will hire a 14-year old if they get a work permit signed by their school. Google it .... lots of info on this.

thinkxingu 06-10-2026 07:19 AM

My daughter is not, ummm, the babysitting/touchy-feely/emotional type. She's more the rough and tough horseback rider/gym rat!

I've suggested she do odd jobs at the camp—which was incredibly lucrative for my son—but I think she wants something formal for some reason.

Market Basket is too far, but Heath's might be on the tour if we go that direction.

do kids still mow lawns or did miracle farms take all that over

TheTimeTraveler 06-10-2026 07:54 AM

The Village Kitchen would hire her, and you're not that far away from that location.....

Jojo's is owned by Heath's, so I suspect the 16+ rule applies to both.

Red Hill Dari?

Moulton's Farm?

Meredith AK 06-10-2026 08:37 AM

Moulton Farm

When our son was 14 he got a job picking weeds and veggies at Moulton Farm. G

I do know you cannot allow a child under 18 to mow lawns.

Many years ago, my sister started as a server at Center Harbor Diner at 14 years old.

Recent post from them:

Probably too far but Town Docks in Meredith hires at 14 for ice cream and trash/yard. Bonus you can drop off and pick up by boat which is awfully fun for them :)

The scoop id JoJo's is under new management which begs the questions as to their relationship with heath's.

Well, JoJo's is still listed on the Heath's website, and Heath's logo is still on JoJo's Facebook page. Plus, in pictures from a JoJo's post just a day ago, a Heath's is sign visible on the store.

Maybe a new manager, but not a new owner.

We have a pretty full seasonal staff at Birch Hill, but we might be able to use her on the driving range. As volume ramps up getting into June, we have to constantly pick balls to keep up with our floating driving range. She can reach out to Mike in the Pro Shop if she's interested!

Thanks for reaching out!

And thanks for all the ideas, everyone—I appreciate the thoughts.

This is my favorite thread in ages. I feel like I have a kid trying to find her first job. We're gonna need updates all summer long... :)

I'm glad I could add some positive content!

We'll be working on this over the next couple weekends, but there are a few flies that might get into the ointment:

1. We're heading to Yosemite and Disneyland for twelve days, which could be a problem.

2. She's committed to the gym—we joined Galaxy to fill in for the summer—and weekend hours, when she is mostly available, are short.

3. We don't want to break up our afternoons/boating/playing time, etc.

I'm really trying to get her to do landscaping, golf cart washing, and other odd jobs at camp—which would give her the most freedom—but she's resistant to those. This is most likely because she's stubborn...like her dad.

Onward!

Weird...your summer plans don't seem to have given my vicarious pleasure a whole lot of weight...

Have fun at Yosemite--it's awesome!

retired 06-11-2026 09:35 PM

You may want to consider your 14 year old to apply to work at one of the many summer camps around the lake. You would agree that money isn't the object, but work ethic and responsibility is. They would have a great and memorable summer.

Ha! I'll be more considerate in the future.

I backpacked Yosemite's High Sierra Camps back in '03, and it sounds like that might have been the sweet spot in terms of open country, crowds, etc. With the cancellation of reservations, crowds have been awful these last few weeks.

That being said, we're only spending a few days in the valley (Curry Village) as most of our time will be spent backpacking the Grand Canyon of the Tuolomne, which still requires backcountry permits to keep the crowds down.

We're also early risers—most of America still likes to sleep in, so we'll do the Mist Trail/Glacier Point, etc. long before the crowds accumulate and spend the afternoon chilling in Yosemite Falls Meadow or something while people fight for parking.

summer job

What about the crazy idea of enjoying being a 14 year old and ...not working for the summer. She's gong to work the rest of her life.

As a high school teacher of mostly seniors who work wayyy too much, I love this.

There is, however, the value of working to earn luxuries. We are a frugal family dedicated to debt-free living (not easy on teachers' salaries), and my (dear, sweet) daughter likes "nice" things, so she has to work for them.

Now, it's important to note here that whatever work she does do will be confined to the first half of weekend/week days, leaving her free to hit the gym, horseback ride, paddleboard/kayak/swim/boat, hang with friends late, etc.!

That's pretty much our family's ethos: work in the morning, play in the afternoon.

There is a little something to this. It's important for kids to learn the value of work and the value of money and learn how to show up and respond to a boss and/or customers. But not too much. In hindsight I worked too much.

I was cutting lawns at 14 to I could buy a car when I turned 16. In the meantime I got a job after school at the tulsa station in meredith for about 25 hours a week then started my first full time job the very first day after graduating from high school and have not stopped since. I got addicted to having money in my pocket at the expense of everything else.

Building work ethic starts early, nothing wrong with that.

I've always said; "Money isn't everything but it sure does help".

Might be too late to apply by 3 Mile Island is owned and run by the AMC and is staffed for the summer. I believe staffers stay on the island but may rotate out on specific days. Depending if your daughter likes to work with kids at local camps or working with an AMC crew. 14 MAY be too young but you don't know until you try. I began working with the Society for the Protection of NH Forests at 14 (back in 1978)

Good point. I know our local Camp Naticook starts taking applications in March/April so they will be fully staffed before camp opens. When I was looking for summer work, I started knocking on doors during spring vacation and was often told they had already done all the summer hiring. It's tough if you want to take two weeks vacation and also only want to work mornings. As noted earlier, best bet is to offer services around Arcadia, or within a bicycle ride distance.
