Bike Week Controversies Elsewhere too

It seems as though the money to be made or lost on a bike rally is not an issue that only the Lakes Region has to tackle. It seems Hollister CA is attempting to cancel theirs. Check this USA today article.

Laconia has been trying to find ways to make some more $$$ on bike week. I am all for it! Theis should not cost the taxpayers anything. This year they rented out the Info Booth Property on Weirs Blvd to a motorcycle rental company.

The other side of the coin is that vendors cannot sell anything until saturday morning June 10... How stupid is that? Who cares if they sell a few T-shirts on friday afternoon? Other than the Laconia PD that is.

You know what amazes me is that the entire city of Laconia acts like nothing happens that week. Its like the elephant in the living room, everyone knows its their but no one acknowledges it. My wife and I have the pleasure of deciding whether we make our kids miss the last week of school and baseball, or try to live a normal life during that week. I’ll never forget the bus full of kids going down lakeside ave last year in the middle of Friday afternoon. You’d think the city would make some concessions, what with 250,000 guests stopping by. It seems like its one huge inconvenience that they’d rather not even deal with.

Hopefully Charlie will keep up the good work of promoting it and working with the city, he’s a better man than me.

It is kinda funny to watch that school bus...

There are some pretty neeat proposals to raise some $$$ on the table. Hopefully some of them will be enacted. I don't care if the city makes money (that would be nice), but I am strongly opposed to us losing money.

Charlie & Co. does a pretty darn good job!

Bike Week 2006

This year's bike week could have some extra curricular activity going on which could add to the expense of law enforcement. This week in Connecticut the leader of a local "Hells Angels" club was shot and killed while riding his bike on I-95. Word is that rival club "Outlaws" were to blame. Several days after incident police received word of a "hit' being put out on other gang members. These things have a way of going on and on. I know the "Bike week" brings in thousands of people during an otherwise slow week and is good for private vendors and buisness, but at what cost to the taxpayers? Having been in the Loconia area fishing during bike week, I've noticed that by far the majority of participants are of the older generation just having a good time, but as usual, it only takes a small number to screw things up.Traditions are hard to break. Let's hope that all remains calm.
