Where in the Lakes Region can you purchase micro brewed beer?

It depends on what you mean by Micro brewed beer. There are independent breweries such as Portsmouth and Magic Hat all over the Northeast that are distributed at most local grocery stores. However, I am not too sure of the truly homemade variety.

i can't help you, but your post reminded me of the Lucknow brewery (now a water plant) that used to be on the Castle in the Clouds property. They made a nice brew...

Lots of decent micros throughout the region. I really like the Tuckerman's -- it's an IPA-like ale with a clean finish...found in most local convenience/package stores. For something just outside the region, try any of the Gritty McDuff's brews. Harder to find in the Lakes Region for some reason (it's brewed in Portland...where "Maine's original brewpub" by the same name is located). But they have some beauties like "Black Fly Stout," "Best Bitter" and loads of seasonals. The owner/founder is an old college housemate of mine.

In NH, the big names are Smuttynose and Red Hook -- both of which put out some fine brews. Smuttynose makes "Old Brown Dog" and "Shoals Pale Ale," which are widely available throughout the region. Red Hook's IPA is found everywhere...I get it down here.

It's too bad that they don't make the Lucknow beers anymore -- it was kind of cool to have ales and lagers brewed with that wonderful Castle Springs water.

All this talk about beer is making me thirsty...and it's just 9 AM... How long 'til lunch time?

If you are up for a ride to North Conway - try out the Moat Mtn Brewhouse & Pub. They have great beer and food. It is located on Rt 16 just before the the scenic overlook in Intervale.

Like Frdxplorer asked, depends on what you call micro-brewed. Are you looking for local breweries ... if so then Grant gave you the same answer I would have. Tuckerman's on a hot day and Old Brown Dog on a cooler one. If you're asking what store has the best selection of beers, like Sam Adam's (?micro?) or Harpoon or whatever, then I'm not sure what's in the Moultonboro area.

Not sure where you can find it, but if you've not tried it before, try Magic Hat #9. It's an interesting and somewhat different taste.

As soon as I sober up I think of some wisecrack to respond with, iffin I 'member this whole post ;)

Course I'm spoiled, living only a few miles north of the real mecca of brewed beers here in New Hampshire - Portsmouth!

I miss Lucknow :( Tuckermans is close second :liplick:

There's a few micro brewerys in the Portsmouth area, about 1 hour away.

While not a micro, it is local to New England. I'm partial to the Long Trail Ales

Brewed in Manchester
 

Milly's Tavern (formerly Stark Mill Brewery) is in Manchester, NH and an easy hop from I-293. The beer is brewed on site. They also have "growlers". (Beer to go.) I always stop on my way up. Take the Granite Street Exit. Turn right over the bridge. Make the first left on Commerical Street. Turn left under the Queen Street Bridge. Get a growler of your favorite brew. (Mine being the John Stark Porter.) Put it in your cooler. Get back on Commerical Street like you never stoppped. Follow the signs to I-293, cross the Amoskeg Bridge, and continue north on I-293.

If you have time, the food is excellent. They have been on Phantom Gourmet, WMUR (several times). They heavily support Animal Rescue League. And every year they feed homeless at the holidays.

Bubba,I'm in there twice a week as I work a couple of mill buildings south of Milly's.The owner,Peter Telge is a friend of mine and he brews some very good ales.

excellent brew ... and fresh ... and the entire family is great. If you see a guy on Friday afternoon getting two growlers filled, say hi. I get one filled for a lawn gnome that cuts my grass at the Alton homestead during the week. Very much of a symbiotic relationship.

Try the Woodstock Inn
 

Again, it's a drive but the Woodstock Inn up in North Woodstock makes some great microbrews. It's about an hour or so from the Lake and a beautiful drive. Well worth a try!

Agree with those that miss Lucknow and the brewing facility at the Castle In the Clouds Water site. That's a loss. Smuttynose has the cleanest and tastiest locally brewed ale in the region. Its on tap at many local stops.

You can also brew your own. There is a store in downtown Meredith where you can purchase all ingredients and equipment for your own personal satisfaction and recreation.

Again,another good friend of mine owns the Woodstock Station.Very good fermented products.Come to think of it,I have one more close friend(you know him Seaplane pilot) who works at the Budwieser plant in Merrimack.How come I know all of these beer related people anyway? I gotta go,I'm thirsty!

I continue to lament the demise of Stone Coast in Laconia. Their 420 IPA was downright marvelous...and at $2.50 / pint, pretty hard to beat pricewise.

At that time, Laconia was my culinary heaven...Goody-Good donuts plus the nachos/beer at Stone Coast. *sigh*

It's easy to make your own and take it from one who knows, it will put a perminate smile on your face!!! :D :laugh:

You need water, so, if everyone brewed their own beer it would drop the lake level way down and the finished product, :liplick:
