Ice Out is Starting Now!

All of the ice in the broads is moving at a good pace towards the south.............if the wind could just blow for the night it will all be in Alton and Wolfeboro in the AM. No, matter what the ice is breaking up and moving and no longer a solid mass in the broads.

Interesting view from above...

The Sat Image is looking hopeful for ice-out conditions.

You may click on the Alternate pixel size: and then 250m for a closer look; but takes a long time to load - if it loads.

Nice

Very nice sat. pic.

And the wind has died down just as fast as it came up but at least the ice was (past tense) moving for a little while.

Looks like there's still a lot of ice.

The ice is still thick, but very fragile. Just the weight of my boathook will push through the ice, which is still 4-5 inches thick.

A good northwest breeze perked up after 6PM, as JDeere pointed out, but dropped near sundown as suddenly as it came up.

The wind has been flukey all day, and the ice floes moved back and forth. A small outboard putted around, later joined by a kayaker (bad idea).

The ice opens-up water channels (and closes up the same channels) at the wind's whim. While an outboard has the power to get through the "chunky" margins, a kayaker can't "pole" his way through, (the ice is too weak) or paddle (the ice has too much resistance to the paddle and the hull). He also just can't get out and walk on the ice, either.

Better to wait until next weekend.

Merrymeeting is out!

The ice literally disappeared off Merrymeeting yesterday. In the morning, a thin layer remained over most of the lake, with channels of water in many places. But by mid-day the sheets were moving and breaking up. A slight wind took care of the rest. By evening all that remained was a bit of slush in 2 of the down wind coves, but it is gone this morning.

Believe it or not, there were 2 folks on PWC's buzzing around most of the afternoon.

Awaiting ice-out, still...

If the M/S Mount Washington were to leave the dock at Center Harbor today it would not get too far.
