Chronicle (Channel 5 - Boston) Visits Lake Winnipesaukee

Wednesday, July 19: Main Streets, Back Roads: Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H.

It’s high season on the Granite State’s largest lake, and Mary Richardson is joining the crowd. She meets a couple who built their own Lake House, a 10x14 retreat, checks out Meredith, where a flurry of development has transformed the town, and discovers a place where boats are art, not transportation. Plus, we’ll get out on the lake on the M/S Mount Washington, and go house and antique hunting.

thanks for the heads up McDude. I'll have to post a reminder on the tv.

Thanks for the heads up. TiVo automatically catches New Hampshire Chronicle every night for me, but I just programmed it to catch "Massachusetts" Chronicle for tomorrow.

I wish more shows were like Chronicle - in the first 30 seconds, they review everything they're going to cover in the show so you can decide for yourself if there's something you want to see.

Thanks for the Info!

Hey, McDude, thanks again for letting us know about tonight's Ch. 5 Chronicle! I thought they did a nice job, though I wish they had concentrated a little less on just Meredith. We "other" towns are nice too!

However, I must say this. Many people are unhappy about the expansion in Meredith. Rusty McClear, who was interviewed extensively, is the person responsible for much of it. I hope people won't get the idea that he is only about money and building an empire. My son and his son were "thrown together", as schools seem to do, as roommates their first year at St. Paul's in Concord. We got to know Rusty then and I also know him from other encounters. He is very concerned about care taking of the Big Lake. Rusty is a really nice guy, in my opinion, and not at all like many contractors who really care little about the place they are building on. If anyone is going to do the massive scale development we see happening in Meredith, I am at least glad it is someone like Rusty.

I particularly enjoyed the part about the 2 person island. The Chronicle photography was very well done and those folks looked like they had a great life in their little cabin. Very cool!

Just wondering, McDude, were the historical stills from your personal collection? I particularly wondered if you might have supplied the pictures of the old trains and stations.

As I've said before, McDude, I really think you should write a book and include your postcard collection. Many folks in the area are very interested in the history and lots of people are particularly intrigued by the lake/rail system connectin. Come on, 'dude, how about it??? :)

....town parking lot redo!

I missed tonight's Chronicle but thought I would let you know that a redesign of the Meredith town dock area has been proposed by the four nearby hotels mgmt. The redesign includes replacing the existing green painted steel highway fence which has many planter boxes with a real nice stone masonry wall, and I assume various built-in planters and a lawn irrigation system or something. Replacing the standard steel highway fence with a stone fence has to be appoved by the NH Dept of Transportation.

I say 'Way-to-go Rusty & company, who will be paying for the entire design, permits and construction of transforming the town docks parking lot area into a parking lot ala Archirtectual Design Magazine. Hey, eat your heart out, South Hampton!

Already done Winni! Check the HISTORY FORUM for "on-line" books on the Lakeshore Railroad, the Wolfeboro Railroad, The Weirs, The Alton Bay Camp Meeting Grounds, Oak Birch Inn etc., etc., and contributions to many other threads!

I was surprised to see the many historical references and photographs used by Chronicle, several of which I have copies of and have been posted in the Photo Gallery in the History Section . (along with over 400 wonderful contributions by Rattlesnake Gal, JacksonB and many others) (You gotta love this website!) I dare say that the collection assembled here rivals that of the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society! The photo below (or one very close to it) was one of the historical photos seen on Chronicle last night.

Loved the show! As seasonal people of Meredith I liked knowing a little bit more about that particular area - and about the Mount as well.
I thought the interview with Rusty was very good and did not show him or his intentions in a negative way at all.
Kudos to Chronicle.

Paper!

I know, McDude, but what about "paper" books? I love your incredible on-line contributions, but I just think they would be great on coffee tables, as gifts to people, and for general information. Heck, you deserve your own shelf in great bookstores such as the "Village Bookstore" in Littleton, NH (my personal favorite). I just think you would do so well if you actually published these in paper format and they would become something to hand down through the generations. There is just something about curling up in a chair before a crackling fire with a good book that sitting in front of a computer can't match!

So, have I missed something, or do you actually have any actual page-tuners published? :D

Does this mean they will put even more of their customers on the Town Docks? Have you seen how many boats stay there all night now?

.....town docks paking lot!

Took a good look at the town docks p-lot today, while empty of cars and it is a little shabby and could definately use a re-do. Compared to what's on either side and across the street, it's like the parking lot is a piece of the old Meredith sandwiched into four pieces of the new Meredith.

If the NH DOT approves a masonry design wall to replace their standard steel rail fence, maybe it can be built in the coming off-season.

Stone masonry planters, a plant irrigation system, expensive benches and trash receptacles, mahogany planks w/ stainless fasteners for the docks, indirect lighting, and a water fountain with water piped in from the Castle Spring! And all on Rusty's nickel! It gets my vote!

Let's all go to the Meredith town docks! Wednesday is dollar ice cream cone day at the Town Docks ice cream stand and the cones are not small.

I just sent my mom the story through TheBostonChannel.com's site and asked her to tape it for me and send me the tape. I know of no way to watch it or get it down here.

Copies of Chronicle

If you can't get someone to record it for you you can purchase a copy from Corporate Media Services in Moultonborough. They have copies of news stories and Chronicle for both NH and Boston.

Chronicle

When the Winnipesaukee segment first aired on Chronicle, I contacted WCVB and asked if it was possible to get a copy. I was expecting that there would be some kind of fee, but was told there was none. Within 5 days, a VHS copy arrived from Ch 5

HomeWood 07-16-2007 02:38 PM

I just got the tape today in the mail of this episode and watched it while eating lunch. My wife and I now have a 5 year plan to move up for sure.;)
