Just a prediction...

I have a feeling that the lake temp. will continue to go down from this point on. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think it will recover to the Aug. peak of 78 degrees. July saw a peak of 79 degrees. I think we are on the cusp of the slippery slope that is the pre-cursor to... (hard swallow) fall. Shrinking daylight hours and lower overnight temps make this almost inevitable:(

Weirs guy 08-09-2006 05:22 AM

Isn't it too early in the year for this type of post?? :emb:

You may be right about the lake temp., but I predict a healthy indian summer if its this "brisk" This early in August.

Lakegeezer 08-09-2006 07:38 AM

Smoke on the water

You are right. We've seen the peak of water temperature for 2006. Every morning this week, there has been fog rising from the water just as the sun rises. This is heat leaving the lake. With nights in the 50's and 60's, and daytime temps struggling to hit 80, summer is on the wane. Now that the sun is setting before 8PM, "unofficial" summer is already gone. Now, its "summer emergency" season. But, we're still about 18 weeks from safe ice anywhere on the lake.

SAMIAM 08-09-2006 08:32 AM

Wifey loves that 80 degree water (reminds her of the Fla Keys)....I prefer it a little more refreshing (70's)
Why even swim when the water is warmer than the air?....you have to get out of the water to cool off:coolsm:

LIforrelaxin 08-09-2006 08:55 AM

wait a minute

Ok, talk about the lake temperature reaching its peak, and I am even ok with talk about days getting shorter and cooler.....but ICE:mad: ....I don't want to read about that yet....cause it will force me to think about it......and it isn't time yet....... :emb:  :D

Temperatures for next week

I checked the Temperatures for next week since Ill be going to the Weirs area and the temperatures are going to be about mid to upper 70s to very low 80s with the coolest being Sunday at 76 and the highest is 82 which is midweek.

tricia1218 08-09-2006 09:22 AM

It is officially still summer! We shouldn't even speak the words fall or ice until at least the middle of next month.

I have to constantly remind my mother who spends her summers at the lake, she said last weekend "it is almost over" drives me crazy it was 100 degrees 6days ago. Please don't rush it....... The only Ice I would like to talk about is in my drink ;-)

Prediction

I remember taking the last, long swim at our friends' place on Camp Island last year (2005) on Sunday, October 16 -- if I remember correctly, the water temp was in the mid
60s and the air temp was well into the 70s, maybe low 80s. It was true Indian Summer.

You just never know...

lfm 08-09-2006 10:04 PM

Summer's not over yet

Just looked back at the date on some pictures we took last year while spending the day wakeboarding. It was Oct 5th. I remember it was a beautiful day at the lake, although we had to wait until after 11:00 AM for the fog to lift.

lfm 08-09-2006 10:09 PM

One more thought on the end of summer

The last day of summer is an official family holiday for us. :) Its become a tradition to take my son out of school on the last day of summer and to spend the day boating. The last three years have all been great days spent IN and On the water.

Grant 08-10-2006 09:03 AM

Lower water temp is actually a *good* thing. This past week, I noticed much less algae than normal for August (well, normal for August over the past 10-15 years...). Overall visibility in the Lake seems much worse than normal this summer, probably attributable to high water throughout fall, spring, summer. But the algae has certainly been lower. Let's hope this continues through August.

I like the idea of making the last day of summer a family holiday. My oldest starts first grade in a few weeks and it would be a fun way to cap off a great season. Thanks for sharing!!

Does the Algae look like light yellow large clumps, almost invisible? We seem to have a lot more than usual this year. When we first moved here 12 years ago there was none. We never planted grass, removed trees or foliage when we built. Now the whole area is built up with large grass and landscaped :( areas. Could the fertilizer being used cause this?

Gilly 20 08-11-2006 01:41 PM

Ya'll are in HEAVEN!

Now- I'm not really a southerner. I've spent lot's of time at the " Beautiful Spirit Lake" ( Winni) in the past and am " stuck" here in Florida for a litttle while longer--
Today- ( Friday, Aug 11) it is the following

hot--87 degrees when we got up this morning
96 degrees right now
101 in the sun
humidity 93 per cent
water temperature 89 degrees
and going down to a " cool" 81 degrees tonight!!!

i can't wait for forum-fest!!!!---and don't worry -- you lucky ones at the lake-- this is your "glory time"-- i'm happy for- and envy all of you right now. god bless!!

Weirs guy 08-11-2006 07:16 PM

it sure is nice on the porch right now.:D

HomeWood 08-11-2006 08:14 PM

Thanks Weirs, just a little envious right now. :) . I'm hoping for a good cold winter down here, but mostly up there. I did not like the ice conditions last year at all or the fact there was no snow and my $90 sled registraion was useless.

Rinkerfam 08-12-2006 12:11 AM

Water temp was at 75 degrees today. Thats 3 less than when I posted this thread. Temps over the next 5 days only support my theory that it's all down-hill from here. Don't get me wrong, I love the time spent at the lake from now to Columbus Day, but I truly believe that we are in the "cool-down" phase of the season.

Weirs guy 08-12-2006 07:45 AM

OK Rinkerfam and HomeWood, but I'm sending you guys my oil bill for this winter! Nothing says economical heating like a 115 year old camp that was winterized 60-70 years ago. burrrr.........

Its funny how 65 deg feels cold right now, but its nice not having the humidity hanging around. I think I'll go jump in the lake seeings its about 20 deg warmer then the air is right now.

Rinkerfam 08-12-2006 08:07 AM

Weirs guy
I agree about the lack of humidity being a plus. Looks to be a great weekend. I think I'll be spending more time in the water than on it too:)

HomeWood 08-12-2006 08:29 AM

It was 68 according to my trucks thermometer on my way into work this morning. I have not seen those numbers in months and it felt great. I'm ready for fall. What is an indian summer exactly? Is it a warm fall or warm winter?

Weirs, if the ice and snow conditions are perfect this year, I will help you out on the heating bill. :D

mets3007 08-12-2006 09:24 AM

Its supposed to be humid Monday afternoon and Tuesday and thats it for next week. The only good thing is that the temperatures are only going to be in the low 80s when its humid and then break Tuesday for nice weather.

Waterbaby 08-12-2006 03:58 PM

Sounds like a plan!!!!!!!!

How old is your son? I'm not sure this would work for us, son is going into 6th grade....... homework city! Sounds like a wonderful plan, however! (hmmmmmm...... maybe it'll just be my own personal official holiday :D )

wildwoodfam 08-12-2006 06:32 PM

30's tonight - wow!

OK folks - cover the flowers and turn on the bubblers at the docks to prevent ICE IN!

Alright - so it wont be that bad - but it is going to drop to near record lows tonight and the North Country is under a Frost Advisory!! BRRRRRRRRRRR!

Who's up for an early early early morning dip in the warm waters of the big lake! It'll feel like bath water at 5am!

:D

He's going into 5th, and well if I can play hookey then so can he. Part of the deal is that he has to get his work from his teacher for the day. I think that's half the fun of it for him. He gets to tell the teacher that his family has its own personal holiday.:)

HomeWood 08-13-2006 08:20 AM

Frost advisory? Wow. It was 60 this morning, so I turned the heat on a little and rolled the window down. I don't want to get our hopes up or jinx us, but could this be a sign of a good winter? good = snow and thick ice :D

Airwaves 08-13-2006 12:14 PM

I started bringing the Bobhouse out onto Saunders Bay this morning, but the ice was a little soft!

Rinkerfam 08-18-2006 12:10 AM

As of Thursday, the lake temp. is roughly equal to that of the first week in Sept. '05. I have a hard enough time dealing with the change from Summer to Autumn as it is. I can only hope that mother nature slows down just a little:eek:

You know, theres really not that much more open water on Weirs bay now then there was in January.

gtxrider 08-18-2006 12:26 PM

Lake Temp!

I noticed that on Monday 8/7 the water temperature reading on the GTX was 79 but by the end of the week it was down to 75. Not sure how accurate it is but it did show a drop. The 3 days of wind and cool weather sure helped cool things down.

Did someone say the Babes are starting their SNOW DANCE?

Gone Daffy

Well now... me thinks you have reached into the archives or just gone a bit daffy.. I didn't see you buzzing around the lake... weren't you here this week?

IG

gtxrider 08-19-2006 10:57 AM

Yes I am/was!

I was there and tried to get up to Rattle Snake. It was a bit ruff! GH should be around this week end. See the photo post of Rattle Snake Island it was from Monday after the Noreaster let up.

The ice picture is from this past Feb. so it is not to old.
