High wind warning!
 

Sounds like we are in for quite a "blow" over the weekend. Hopefully there will be some pics posted to show just how the lake will be affected.

For those of you who are lucky enough to be at the lake "full time", please stay safe!

We had whitecaps on Weirs bay around noon. its calmed down a little right now, but definitely not a nice outside day. :eek:

High Wind
 

Usually I know how high the wind gusts are, but today's winds have been out of the southeast to southwest and in that general direction our wind speed indicator is not accurate due to the terrain, buildings, and trees that tend to block the wind in that direction. However, I can say with certainty that the gusts were high, as we lost a tree this morning around 9:30 AM, which did quite a job on our deck, as you can see below.

Wild water
 

I took a walk down at Ellacoya State Park today,here a a couple of pictures looking out towards Welch island. It was wild. As I looked out on the water there were so many whitecaps that it almost looked like snowpiles on the surface. The winds were so strong that I thought I should not be amongst the trees so I didn't stay too long!

That looks like a young pine that fell. Must have been a mighty wind.:(

That's a shame your tree did damage to your deck but thank goodness no one was on the deck and that it didn't hit your house!

What the picture doesn't show is how tall the tree was. We estimate it to be 80 feet tall. The top quarter is hanging over the water now. It's a big, heavy tree and I am very glad it is down. I'm not happy about the damage it did but at least it didn't hit the house during a Nor'easter. Mother Nature did us a favor, somewhat.

My mistake
 

I didn't even think that the tree was the very top of a very tall pine! Did it uproot, or crack midway up?

I took some similar shoots here, I can't remember them ever being much worse, even last fall.:eek:

So sorry that beautiful, freshly stained deck has been smashed so badly. :( And a million thanks for all the help you two have so unselfishly given as we prepare to move into the new house. You two are simply amazing, and the finest friends we could ever ask for! ;)

Well, the good news is that it won't be as hard to match the paint in the repaired areas! :rolleye2:

My first thought was "That su ... errr ... vacuums" ! Then my next thought was in agreement with prior statements by pmj and QL - good thing the wind was in that direction and the tree didn't come down on the house ! That would have really su ... errr ... reverse blowed. :eek: ;)

ps - Did the canoe escape damage ? Looks like it might be a lil bent but perhaps will pop back into shape ...

Yes, if the tree had to come down we'd rather have it mangle the deck than the house, so it could have been much worse.

As for the canoe, it's an Old Town "Camper" made of an ABS laminate material called "Oltonar/Royalex". Old Town claims the canoe can literally be folded in half and it will pop back to its original shape. I haven't performed that particular test on it ;), but the fallen tree was removed from the deck and canoe today and most of the canoe's big dent has popped back. There are still some creases in the hull, but they don't look serious. It's supposed to be around 60 degs (or higher) here tomorrow with bright sun, so I'll put the canoe in the sun then for a few hours and see if the creases come out when the hull warms up.
