Governor Endicott Question
I was recently paging through some of the photos and history posted by RG, McDude, and others about the old steamers. Great stuff.
I was interested in learning about the fate of the Governor Endicott, did some Googling, and oddly enough came across a reference to an episode from the old "Divers Down" video series. Apparently, the same episode in which they visited the Lady of the Lake included the "wreck" (or what's left of it, I understand it was dismantled) of the Governor Endicott, which was referred to as "off limits." Anyone know why this is "off limits"?? This is surely a question that Tom from DWC could answer in a second, but perhaps someone here has the answer. (And, Tom or Scott -- I know you guys lurk and read from time to time...any insights?!? Just curious.) Thanks. |
I believe I might have the answer!
The remains of the Governor Endicott, are in the area of Paugus Bay that are off limits due to being in proximity to the inlet pipe for the City Water Supply.

Well, that explains it!
Many thanks. g |
It may explain a few things about the cities water supply, too! I always thought it had a hint of "wood".
|
It also might explain why I get "wrecked" when I drink VO and water at the lake!

Am I correctly recalling that that area is designated 'No human contact' with the water ? If so could one "dive" the wreck using an ROV ? |
Sure just make sure the towns people all doesn't flush at once...it may pull in the gadget into the pipe.

Imagine the video

Yikes, now there's a video that wouldn't make it to YouTube ! |
It lies...
(from what I have been told and seen on the sonar)....on the railroad track side of the channel across from Irwin Marine. It is almost under the black channel marker. Hard to find by eye and difficult by sonar/FF as the milfoil and weeds are terrible along with the fact it is sunk into the bottom some what. Caught a glimpse of it this summer (late) while we were moving around/fueling the FD rescue boats. Not sure what the viz is like on the wreck itself but it was almost 25 feet two summers ago when we (the dive team) were diving/training in the lift bridge area.
That is all.... Scuba Jay |
A couple of correct posts
Grant and WeirsBeachBoater are both correct. I won't go into exact location because it is off limits. To the point that if you are seen there without VERY special permission, MP will "remove" you. And it will be expensive outing. I don't want to help anyone get in trouble.
But to answer your curiosity, there is not much left. More than the Belknap. But not much. |
