I'd wait for the water to get a little warmer....... but I say go for it.

AC2717 05-07-2007 03:44 PM

46 degrees

according to the water temp on the lake forum it is only 46 degrees I would think of a penguin plunge but not a full swim, Good luck I am backing you on this one

Pineedles 05-07-2007 08:42 PM

Swim record

I was in as early as April 26th, 1968 and as late as October 6, 1972. You can wait a few more days and still beat my best!:D

Pineneedles:

Today is May 7th, how could he/she beat your best on April 26th. By the way, may I dear ask how you remember these dates?

Kona Family 05-08-2007 07:47 AM

Well I am an avid wakeboarder and went Nov 2 last year in a high end O'neil wet suit ... my hands and feet were numb after 20 minutes. Water temp was 48 degrees. So, my recommendation is wait for 50 degrees and you still NEED a wet suit if you plan on swimming longer than 15 minutes. Even at this temperature you have to worry about the initial shock and diaphragm tightening which could lead to hyperventilation. Get a suit and you'll be fine !!

Second Curve

Oops! My bad. As to remembering, it is written in stone, literally. I carved the dates in cement when we were replacing the walkway to the dock soon after the Oct. swim. My mother, who wrote down everything provided me witht the date for the April swim.:D

Besides, many people including my cousin's family have taken "Polar Plunges" in Jan/Feb.

Grant 05-08-2007 09:36 AM

I went in the Lake on Saturday afternoon...

...in a wetsuit.

Short tune-up dive to check dock crib damage.

15 minutes, 22 feet max depth. With a 7mm farmer john, hood and gloves, I was quite comfortable. Could've stayed in for a full tank but opted for a martini in front of the fire.

just made april

My son and I took a dip Saturday April 28. I set out planning on jumping off the end of the dock and swimming back to shore, but changed my mind after hitting the water. Turned right around and climbed back on the dock. It was COOOOLD!

Weirs guy 05-08-2007 12:48 PM

Mike, you let me know when you'll be paddling through the Weirs and I'll meet you with a beer.

fatlazyless 05-08-2007 04:00 PM

Ok, so I've gone wading in up to five feet deep a few times, soon after ice-out in April, with just a regular bathing suit and water shoes but that's knowing I'm just 30 seconds away from hopping into a 102 degree hot tub. Without the hot tub......no-way! For about two minute, your comfort level gets kind of overwhelmed going from 37 to 102 degrees. Sort of like thawing out frozen fingers or toes, too quickly.

I've never had the guts to jump directly into 37 degree water that was over my head. It is my understanding that falling overboard into cold water triggers an uncontrollable need to gasp with an open mouth which quickly can lead to drowning. So, if I ever find I'm about to fall in, I plan to close my mouth with conviction and also hold it closed with my hand, so's to avoid the automatic reflex. Surviving cold water is possible if you really try hard.

Plus of course, wearing a life belt or pfd is smart.

...but the first swim of the season is definitely the colder of the two.

April 19th was my earliest and November 27th was my latest...we spent Thanksgiving on Bear Island that year...nothing like a cold dip in the lake to help digest all that turkey.

Had some folks on Merrymeeting who went in on Jan 6th this year! (Air temp was in the 60's that day)

Pineedles 05-09-2007 11:19 AM

Merrymeeting

60 air temp, but looking at the water temp for Jan. 6th it was 37-38 degrees that day! WOW! Very Hardy Souls.

HUH?? Is this a real question?Very impressed with your swims the last few years but I have to start wondering why you post this again this year.

wildwoodfam 05-10-2007 12:35 PM

Fraternity brother mentality...

I am going to jump from this roof top to that one - dare me???

I can swallow 500 goldfish in 60 minutes - dare me???

I am going to swim across the lake from Meredith to Alton - dare me???

I see a trend.

You've done it now for what - 3 years? Why wouldn't you do it again this year. Good luck and make sure you avoid those nasty alligator snapping turtles!

Go for it!

Mike, Since Harry (Can't remember his last name) swam the lake back in the 60s-70s, it impressed all of us at Pineedles to go for the gold! I swam from the Center Harbor Docks to Little One Mile. I realize it was only 1 mile but the inspiration came from Harry. Go for it!

phoenix 05-13-2007 01:23 PM

water temp is now higher than last year at the same time given all the cold weather we had last May. Should be 60 by Memorial Day
