What is Bishops?
1 Attachment(s)
Hello all!
Hope everyone's having a great spring. Put the boat in Memorial Day weekend and had a terrific few rides. Haven't had a chance to make it back up since. My dad came across an old photo and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on it. The label is "Bishops on Wolfeboro Bay" and the pedigree inciates its from the 1940's. My dad thought it might be an early Bailey's, but I think the town docks have been around much earlier than that. I think it might be a previous incarnation of the Windrifter Yacht Club. Thoughts? Yes, now Windrifter timeshares. Nice picture.

Windrifter is not on the water is it?
Tis, the Windrifter does not have waterfront, does it? Or were these cottages located on the shore where Kingswood golf now owns the property? We are new residents of Wolfeboro, and I have a great interest in all the history of the town. I have been enjoying all the old postcards on the forum photopost, but sometimes, like Wolfeboro Matt, I wonder where some of these scenes were taken. Does anyone know of a good source to pinpoint the historical locales?
Thanks alot for all the info you all provide! |
Windrifter water front
Hi Beagle,
In addition to the main property on South Main Street, the Windrifter also has 8 units right on Wolfeboro Bay, at the end of Lake Street on the left hand side (Lake Street is on the left as you start to head out of downtown on North Main). Wolfeboro Matt |
Well....there you have it!
Bishop's was indeed located at the end of Lake Street.
Beagle: You should pick up a copy of Remember When...A Collection of Old Photographs of Wolfeboro, NH - A Bicentennial Project of the Wolfeboro Chamber of Commerce - Edited by Kathy O'Meara - 1976. There was a copy available on e-bay just last week! The photo below is from the book. Wolfeboro Matt: Great Old Photo! It's now Garwoods...
Isn't that now Garwoods? Kewl picture.

No, it is not Garwoods. If you are in the bay it is to the left of Garwoods on the point. It did indeed used to be the Pirate's Den- a sort of night club with drinking and loud music often complained about. It was owned by Larry Grover. He had a big wooden boat named the Californian.

Thanks for the reference source!
mcdude, I have been admiring not only your postcards and photos, but also enjoying reading your history lessons. I will definitely look for a copy of that book on ebay and amazon, it will provide a lot of good summer reading!
