Old boat parts, Help!

The wife (Deb's Joy) has a 1968 Century Buccaneer with a Mercruiser 160 (the chevy straight six) engine. She has been overheating (both Deb and the boat) and we have traced the problem to a hopelessly corroded exahust manifold. Not an easy part to find. They stopped making that design in 1970.

The engine is a real honey and we would like to avoid a re-power.

Any one out there know of an old bone yard that might have one of those manifolds out back behind the barn?

Any help would be great.

Misty Blue.

custom forging

If you can remove the original part relatively intact, you may be able to have a foundry cast another one. This may be expensive though.

Also check the antique car shows. You may find a replacement there, or get a referral. Since she runs it in fresh-water having a non-marine rated part wont be as critical. You can use high-temp paint inside and out to extend it's life.

Good luck!

You might want to try Faye's. Channel used to be the main Century dealer (years back). They may have some ideas as well.

Check this listing it may have the part you are looking for and several others that may be nice to have as spares. You just never know.

How "hopelessly corroded" is it?

If the manifold is cast iron, that's an easy metal to braise ("bronze-weld") back into shape. Braising is a fairly easy technique to master and is pretty durable. You could do a small repair yourself—buying all the materials you need from a hardware store for ~$50.

A metal shop could braise a small repair for less than an hour's fee. (There may be more modern metal repair techniques for cast iron than braising). Braising would make even more sense if the corrosion is on the outside surface of the manifold.
