Dog-friendly places in the Lakes Region

We finally got our dog! YIPPEE! He's a great addition to the family but we're a group who likes to be out-and-about a lot. We love to bring the dog with us (he's a beauty - I'll post a pic later, when I have a chance) and he's very well behaved - even for a corgi! ;)

Can y'all recommend some dog-friendly parks, beaches, campgrounds - whatever you can think of - where we can visit in the area?

Thanks!

Dog Beach

A bit of a drive, but try York Beach in Maine. They have early and late hours where dogs can be on the beach.

Congratulations on the new addition to your family. Most business welcome pets but be thoughtful of others when your little buddy has to use the bathroom.Nobody appreciates a a big ol' doggie dump on their front lawn. Most owners are considerate ,but every nowand then someone marches right out onto the grass with their dog and leaves a deposite that has to be cleaned up.

I live right on a main drag and HATE HATE HATE it when people toilet their pooch on my lawn. I vowed long before we got our dog that I would ALWAYS pick up after it when it dropped a duce! (And I always have!)

My only other pet peeve is that most parks, etc. in our area don't have trash cans. I'd love to have a place to drop that bag o' fudge but generally have to hold on to it until I get home. What's up with the no trashcans? Even the new RR park in Alton doesn't have 'em.

A nice hike up Lockes Hill or Mt. Major is a great family (including the furry members) activity.

Common Man Inn - Plymouth

My wife and I just spent a weekend at the Common Man Inn in Plymouth. They have clean, dog friendly rooms (dog bowl & dog bed provided, plus a homemade treat with your dog's name written in icing upon check in).

Although the Inn itself is pretty close to 93, you're still close to Squam. Very nice place.

ooohhh - great tip!

Thank you!

And now that JG1222 has made me think of it, the Opechee Inn and Spa has some very nice pet friendly rooms too.

I am sorry to hear that...

It's probably because people weren't picking up after Fido and left waste around. Those same people will probably whine about the lack of dog-friendly places.

On a side note...

We're looking for a big field to play in near Alton - preferably not a park - because I want to take my dog off leash and don't want to do that in public (re: people with allergies or fear of dogs). I am very responsible for my dog - I do clean up after him, always. He's in training to be a therapy dog and well behaved. I do have children and they are usually with me - they are also well behaved (but honestly - the dog is the easiest of them all!) :D

If you have a large field and don't mind us running around on it, please PM us. We'd be happy to have you meet us and would appreciate permission to be on your property and promise not to be a nuance about it. (We might even bring you homemade cookies or something as a big THANK YOU! :liplick: )

Here he is - his name is Tanker:

Castle in the Clouds

After searching the Castle website, I could not find any mention of dogs being allowed.
Would like to take my wife and the daschie there this weekend. Short of calling them, anyone here know if dogs are allowed there?
Thanks.

When my wife and I visited there last year, the woman in the ticket booth practically made us go back home and get the dogs. From our understanding, dogs are very welcome on the general grounds/trails.

Pet Friendly

Something close to Alton, eh? Not sure how far this might be for you, but the overflow parking area at Gunstock (at the end of Area Rd) is a great spot to let the pooch run around. We enounter some locals that stop in daily and the area is large enough and remote enough that nobody's lawn will be affected.

Be warned -- there is a pond and if your pup likes to swim you should have a towel handy!

Maybe we'll see you there -- our Old English loves the spot and always likes to play with other pups.

Tamworth Inn

Is a pet friendly place. I think they even have a special dog weekend in late October or early November.

Argie's Wife 05-21-2008 03:54 PM

Just a followup note...

If you've taken your dog(s) to The Footbridge in Moody, ME (near Wells/Ogunquit) you can forget now. They've posted signs for no dogs. Period. 365 days a year - NONE allowed. And there's a $100 fine if you break the rules. :(

The regular beach in Wells still allows dogs from October(?) until June, so we're getting our ya-yas out then...

Castle Rules

Dogs (pets) are allowed on the Castle property however they are not allowed up at the Castle or in the Carriage House.

All the trails and fields are available.

Castle is for the dogs!

Thanks for the pet friendly suggestions. The Castle in the Clouds was great! Pleasant trails, beautiful views and waterfall. Very nice picnic area near pond in a shady spot for lunch with fido..err..our dachshund's name is Lenya. :)

Took Tanker and the kiddos to Wells Beach today. The weather at the beach was so mild that I had wished I hadn't dressed the kids in long pants and long-sleeved shirts. It was warm and breezy - very comfortable. Tanker ran and played with other dogs.

If you're looking for somewhere to go this weekend and somewhere that Fido will have a good time, this would be a great time to go to the beach before it gets too cold! :)
