Granite Steak & Grille

This restaurant is on Rt 11 in Rochester, for those on their way up to the lakes region. We have driven by several times and just never went in.
Finally tried it and we will definately be back.

Wow, what a hidden gem. The owners have done a wonderful job with the menu and atmosphere of this restaurant. We ate their last night, four meals consisted of
ribs (very tender), excellent sweet potato fries.
filet tips ...these were not like sirloin tips they were filet mignon tips. melted in your mouth.
tex mex -chicken, ribs .BBQ sauce was very tasty.
they have a huge menu. Prices are very reasonable.

Lighter fare menu was far from "light". When the lighter fare menu says 1/2 rack of ribs..it is exactly that. We expected tiny portions abut they were good size portions. regular menu had large size beef selections, full rack ribs, etc.
You can even order 20+ ounces of beef for $1 per ounce over 20oz.

Good wine and beer list..they offer 5oz and 8oz glasses of wine, domestic and imported. My only gripe was that I did not specify what size glass of wine I wanted..totally missed the 2 sizes listed. The waitress brought the biggest size (8oz). I didn't find out til the bill came and I saw that it was the largest size. She should have asked when I didn't specify rather than bring the biggest, more expensive glass.

They have the menu on their web site:

We are weekend night regulars there and agree with your comments. Plus, they have live entertainment downstairs (Smokey's Tavern.....place has a fire-fighters' theme...) Friday and Saturday nights.....maybe not for the 20-something crowd but great for those of us that remember the Impossible Dream year of '67. For those en-route to the Big Lake it is surely worth a stop.

I agree also. We live on RT11 and have been going by this place since it has been open and have been under the impression that their prices were high and portions small.(a friend told us this when they first openned) Well we finally gave them a try about a month ago and have been back several times since. Wonderful atmosphere, Great food and prices and selection and a courteous staff. And they take FIRA cards. We reccomend this place if you are in the neighborhood.:D

Based on the good reviews I was going to try this place out. Is it still as good as noted here? Just wondering if anyone had been there recently as the prior posts are form a few years back.

Very good we go there often, great senior menu prices and you don't have to be a senior. Although they do not advertise a side sald as an option on the senior menu you can get one if you prefer. entree, soup or salad, drink and dessert from 8 to 14 dollars. great service and food. fried mushrooms are yummy.

We also go there often and have never had a bad meal.

It's hard to decide between Johnson's and Granite on the route 11 ride. The Granite is a great place with lots of choices from steaks to fried clams. The service is always good no matter how busy they are. We love downstairs at Smokey's Tavern!

Granite Steak / Smokey's Tavern just keeps getting better and better. For those of us who are regulars, their daily specials are a treat...you never know what creative items they'll come up with, plus old standbys like a hot turkey sandwich.

If you're not that hungry, try a side Caesar salad and some soup.

They no longer do the FIRA card but they have their own card with their sister establishment, Windjammers. Basically, you spend $100 and you get $10 to spend as you please...food or booze. Thus, in reality, everything is discounted 10% for card-holders. Not a bad deal at all....

thanks everyone

I drive by Granite Steak every weekend during boating season. It's good to know that there is a good spot to stop for a good meal along the way.

Ditto on the good reviews. The steak tips were awesome the first time and then I tried to eat the 20 something ounce Prime rib. I must have hit a good night because I swear it was more like a 30 ounce. I seriously couldn't eat the whole thing and had to bring it home to make a PR sandwich with it the next day. The Tavern downstairs is excellent to and the music was great when we went last year. Haven't been back this year though.....Man now I have to drive down there again. My mouth is watering for those tips.....:liplick:

Just wanted to thank everyone for the updated reviews. We stopped in a week or two ago and had a late lunch in the tavern. Looks like we found a new place to stop for a bite on the way up.
