Name that dog...

1 Attachment(s)
Since everyone is sick of winter, speed limits, and politics I thought that I would ask for help with something a bit more fun. The puppy in the attached picture is the latest resident of Mark Island and remains unnamed after a week. We cannot come up with anything and I am afraid that if left to our 8 year old and my wife it will be something pathetic. He is a 5 month old Japanese Chin.

I was trying to come up with something lake, Jimmy Buffett, or Red Sox related. Any suggestions???

Please help before he becomes permanently named "Chin"...

SAMIAM 03-31-2008 03:34 PM

I vote for "Fang"

hazelnut 03-31-2008 03:35 PM

I vote for "Tek."

My other 3 range from 65lbs to 118lbs. For the record, my cat outweighs him too...

Grady223 03-31-2008 04:01 PM

How about The Babe

Quilt Lady 03-31-2008 04:18 PM

My cat is bigger than your dog!

I suggest MARKIS (as in Mark Island). Just remember, when the little devil gets out late at night and you have to call his name over and over, you don't want to sound like a fool.:)

Grant 03-31-2008 04:20 PM

"Nikko" -- which is a beautiful Japanese lake nestled in the lush, green mountains of north-central Japan.

Here's a slice of the lake and the surrounding mountains (the focus of this shot was Kagon Falls...)

Oh well...image linking won't work, so here's a link to Nikko:

xltRod 03-31-2008 04:40 PM

How about,Gizzmo?

Nagigator 03-31-2008 04:58 PM

How about "Pugsly" ?

Nagigator 03-31-2008 05:06 PM

Wait! I have another one. "Winni the pooch"

secondcurve 03-31-2008 05:18 PM

How about Fenway? Sox related and catchy, don't you think?

secondcurve 03-31-2008 05:22 PM

Pudge might be another appropriate name!

Nagigator 03-31-2008 05:38 PM

Pudge! THATS what I was thinking of.

KonaChick 03-31-2008 05:39 PM

We have Winston, Winni for short. My family and I have met serval Winni's out and about on the lake.

riverat 03-31-2008 06:22 PM

He kind of resembles Manny Ramirez so how about Manny

nj2nh 03-31-2008 06:32 PM

I guess Big Popi wouldn't quite work, huh?

I am partial to Lucy. We had a wonderful Lucy for 16 years. Now we have a Molly.

I rather like the Japanese names. Dice-K???? Uh, no.

nj2nh

Kamper 03-31-2008 07:04 PM

"Screeeeetch!"

That's the sound his brakes made before he ran in to the fridge.

Ha! We had a Molly, and now have a Lucy who joins our Reilly. Funny how dog handles are recycled over and over...

Jeti 03-31-2008 09:00 PM

" ChinChilla " The Killer...

chipj29 04-01-2008 06:18 AM

I would go with Cujo. Just yelling his name would spread fear into any uninvited visitors.

Rose 04-01-2008 07:09 AM

Godzilla
Minilla
Gamara

Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra won't really work since they have wings.

Okay, I watched too many Creature Double Features on Saturdays.

jrc 04-01-2008 07:30 AM

Little Poppy, Manny, Tito, for Red Sox names

Cheeseburger for Buffet

SIKSUKR 04-01-2008 08:39 AM

Mark-a-rita could work with both sexes.

AC2717 04-01-2008 09:34 AM

maybe

I like:
Trot

even though he is gone, but Trot would work for the doggy

dpg 04-01-2008 10:34 AM

How about Gus. :D

What a riot. Years ago I dated a Molly till she stopped by one day and found Lucy there! :(

hazelnut 04-01-2008 11:24 AM

I like TITO..... Fits him well

Russtic 04-01-2008 01:14 PM

How about Woofboro?!

Frank 04-01-2008 02:15 PM

I'd shy away from using a current player's name... say you call him "Manny", then in 2009 when Manny is a Yankee (after the Sox don't exercise his option years), you will be forced to kill your own dog. That would be very sad for you and the kids, although not as sad as having a dog named after a Yankee. ;)

Try "Yaz" or "Teddy" or some such if you want a player's name!

- Frank

Mark 04-01-2008 02:25 PM

I like part of that

I vote for the front part of that  .
Call the dog Mark just that I only go with one sex.

Another few choices:

Clyde
How about BEAR
or even Speedy
There already is a Bizer dog so how about a Duncan dog.

There is always the generic Rover.

gtxrider 04-01-2008 02:32 PM

that dog!

Damon...:(

From Jimmy Buffet FINS, Juicy Fruit, Jolly mon or Billy Voltaire

steadyon 04-01-2008 04:21 PM

I vote Dice-k

KPW 04-01-2008 04:49 PM

I second Shima

Seeker 04-01-2008 04:55 PM

How about Pokemon? You can call it Pokey for short. Means Pocket Monster in Japanese and it looks like one.

secondcurve 04-01-2008 04:55 PM

Codeman:

So where do you stand on naming your beast?

ApS 04-01-2008 05:50 PM

Don't name him "Ihiryu"

Still nothing the boss will agree to. I tried Fenway, Manny, and a few others prior to posting and she shot them down. There's still hope!

NHKathy 04-01-2008 08:02 PM

we know a family that has a "Winni" too (a golden retriever)
their dog before Winni was "Keller" as in Kellerhaus :)

But I do like "Shima"
(good thought, Skip)
and I also like "ChinChilla"!

jrc 04-01-2008 08:30 PM

Ok my wife said Buff, or Sox

JayDV 04-01-2008 09:12 PM

I had an uncle who had 2 chins ...

we would just watch them wattle around (groan)

According to here the Chin is an intelligent and loyal dog and soon finds a way to rule the house. Well with 3 larger dogs around that may not be too successful, but Chins will surround themselves with the ones that love them.

I think because the pup will rule the house and owners (didn't know that did ya?) and because of the status of Winni property (King being used too often) Baron is a good strong name.

It kind of looks like the only time you will be yelling across the neighborhood for him will be non-snowfall times both for his color and, anything over a dusting and you might lose him .

Hows about Tessie? I know its not a girl, but if no one tells the dog...
Pesky?
Lansdown?
Duffy (Duffys cliff was replaced by the green monster)?

Some old school steamer names like Belknap?

Or some Abenaki names, like alemos (Dog) http://www.native-languages.org/abenaki_animals.htm.

Island Dweller 04-03-2008 03:50 PM

Someone I know named their's Rem-dog after Remy

Waterbaby 04-03-2008 08:14 PM

Kennel Name?

Does he have any type of a kennel name? That may not be the correct term (it's too late for me to call my mom, who is a Shih-tzu breeder, for the answer). Anyway, part of my my 9-year old Shih-tzu's registered name is "Bear To Remember" which evolved into calling him Remmy*, and Rem-Dog* as a nickname. His name fits his personality, and you definitely have to keep personality in mind when naming a pooch -- sometimes the doggy will end up "naming himself", so to speak, lol!

*These names had, and have, absolutely NOTHING to do with Jerry Remmy or the Red Sox, Rem has been Rem since before any of that happened. I'm thinking I should have TM'd the name "Rem-Dog" years back, lol! :rolleye2:

John A. Birdsall 04-05-2008 12:09 PM

dog name

If you want to stir the pot, name the dog after your mother or mother in law.
I told my sister I was naming my dog after my mother, and boy did that stir the pot. Well, the dog was born on her birthday so.... Mom named the dog BINGO, something shed does every sat night in NH during the summer.

GWC... 04-05-2008 04:57 PM

Steve Martin's character in "The Jerk" had a somewhat unique name for his dog.

Being in the general proximity of Bear Island, some there might think you are referencing them when you call your dog.

Now there's a name that could be a lot of fun. Imagine the looks on the neighbors' faces on that rare occassion when you may have to walk around the neighborhood searching for the dog which wandered off ... yelling BINGO!:laugh::laugh:

nj2nh 04-06-2008 05:19 PM

B-I-N-G-O and Bingo was his name, oh!

nj2nh

CanisLupusArctos 04-06-2008 06:15 PM

I'd be a bit uneasy about giving him a current Sox player's name. I'm sure someone out there probably named a pet (or even a kid) "Damon" or "Johnny" after the '04 World Series. And then the unthinkable happened....

How 'bout Yawkey?

I used to work as a vet tech assistant and I have seen THAT NAME used many, many times for dogs and cats. It's hard to call a patient to an exam room when you can't say their name in public!

Just Wonderin 04-09-2008 07:51 AM

Well????

You've gotten more suggestions than I could have imagined...have you decided on a name yet?

My wife is being a pain... So far her and my daughter are still calling him Chin. I appreciate the responses, she has not found anything she likes. Typical women... :D

lfm 04-09-2008 12:29 PM

How about coming up with an acronym

I add the "t" and call a bully at work PITA. It works twofold because his last name is Payne.

Mashugana 04-11-2008 05:42 AM

Another possible name to consider.

One of my friends is an avid fisherman. He calls his pet Hooker.

How's that for your doggie? I can hear you calling for your dog :)

gtxrider 04-11-2008 08:47 AM

Old Sox name

"PESKY" Pesky pup sounds good.

codeman671 04-11-2008 01:02 PM

We have an update

After having lunch with my wife, Pesky is under serious consideration.

Of course the 8 year old has final approval...

Will advise! :D

Careful with what the young one suggests. My son, who was around 5 at the time, decided to name our new (very white) cat Marshmellow. :D

Steven Wright's dog

I think it was the comedian Steven Wright that said he named his dog Stop. He would call come here, Stop!
