Ice-Out Declared!

I was just notified that Dave Emerson declared Ice-Out on Lake Winnipesaukee last night, April 23rd at 8 PM.

I am awaiting further confirmation.

Ice out declared?

Interesting you say Ice out declared. I see an article in teh laconia citizen dated this morning saying Dave Emerson thinks it will be today. No mention of 8pm last night

Why I am so interested?? I have 10:22am today as my time.

Now that is real good news!!!!!

webmaster 04-24-2008 11:01 AM

WMUR is reporting that Ice-Out occurred at 8:00 AM this morning. That could be an error.

My information came directly from Dave Emerson's wife and was confirmed by the Lakes Region Association. They were in the process of distributing the official announcement and when I spoke to them it was last night at 8:00 PM!

UPDATE: I just spoke to the Lakes Region Association again. They confirmed again that the official announcement has been distributed to the media and that the date and time are April 23rd at 8:00 PM. I have contacted WMUR about their report.

UPDATE: WMUR has corrected their report.

jetskier 04-24-2008 11:38 AM

and the answer is?

New Contest

Should we now start a guessing game as to when the water temp will go high enough for us to be able to swim without freezing our "buns"?! My guess would be mid-August!:D

hilltopper 04-24-2008 12:29 PM

I haven't lived in the immediate area for too long, but I didn't realize there was a Center Harbor and a Center Harbor Bay?

Congrats to the winner of the contest!

Cristen 04-24-2008 12:33 PM

Ice-Out Yay!!

So exciting....I'll be jetskiing up there in about 6 weeks. Can't wait for summer!!

Yup. We have the "Town of Center Harbor" with its board of selectmen, bylaws, population, and all the other things that make a town. Within view of the Center Harbor Town Hall there is the part of Lake Winnipesaukee called Center Harbor Bay. If the town was, say, Center Sandwich instead, we could call the water "Center Sandwich Harbor" but alas, someone in the Colonial era put "Harbor" in the town name.

Re: the media during iceout, they plan for stories like this. It's not a fire, storm, crime, or major political upset. All other stories get planned for a certain day, and an editor puts it on a reporter's calendar for that day. So, probably earlier in the week they talked to their contacts who said it would go out by the weekend, and they planned the iceout stories for the weekend. The ice went out yesterday, and the reporters didn't have it on their calendars until today or tomorrow, so they weren't ready. That's just my guess.

For those wondering when the lake will warm up enough to swim, a lot of that depends on humidity. Humid weather helps the lake temp to climb quickly toward whatever the air temp is. When the air is dry, there is always water evaporating off the surface in the same way it evaporates off your skin. It has the same cooling effect on both. Typically we don't start getting a few humid days until late May or early June. I've found that Memorial Day weekend can be an enjoyable swim (usually the water is around 60) if I've been out doing heavy yard work, getting hot and sweaty. You've got to be ready to get in the water within a couple minutes after you stop working or else your heart rate will slow and you'll cool off too much before you get in the water. :)

ONE MUST realize press time deadlines to go to print!!!

hazelnut 04-24-2008 05:29 PM

Well done. At one point it looks as though Pine Island Guy gets out in the nick of time with the time lapse as the ice flows head right for the area where his boat was. :)

Canis,

I've found it's also a function of age! In my teens and twenties, 1-May was good enough if it was ice out, in my thirties, Memorial Day was great!

I'm now at 4-July! :D

Don,
Your "Ice Out Declared" page needs a tweak. It has the wrong time. 3:17 was last year, I think.

40 Degrees the Key

Seems to me the main culprit in the deicification of the Lake is the temperature of the water. The warmer water eats at the ice from below. Wind plays a part as the ice gets thin enough to break up and be more actively mixed with the water (like stirring a drink). 40 degrees seems to be the key water temperature - very shortly after the water temp gets to 40 ice is out. Here is the history since 2002.

Year Ice Out Temp Reached 40 deg
2002 4/4 4/3
2003 4/25 4/20
2004 4/20 4/14
2005 4/20 4/17
2006 4/3 4/1
2007 4/23 4/23
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I guess a water temperature of 40 degree is once again the key - reached 40 on Tuesday, Ice Out Wednesday.

This forum has a lot of readers.

Yesterday I put an Ice Out video up on YouTube, I only mentioned it in this thread. Twelve hours later it had more than 200 views.

There must be large numbers that read but don't post.

According to the members list, there are 2633 members here. I would venture to guess that less than 200 people post regularly.

Pine Island Guy 04-25-2008 01:36 PM

i've sent the link to all my friends and family!

Bear Islander - thanks for making the video and posting it on youtube (and anyone that wants to capture and use frames from the PI webcams you are more than welcome to as well). i'm sure a percentage of the 200 hits were my friends and family that i sent the link out to :)

this weekend we won't have to dodge the ice getting out there!!

"Ice-Out" on Lake Winnipesaukee was officially declared on
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 3:17 pm.

Wouldn't we want to fix that error? It might seem minor and trivial but some take their ice out guesses very seriously!!
