No problems on Long Island. I am not sure why the animals are swimming out, 2 by 2,to this very large vessel docked off of Little Bear, however.:):)

This is ridiculous. My kids and I have mushrooms growing on us.:laugh:

Good to have a boat or two sitting outside the house, just in case. Glad we're not south Texas though......think about 20" of rain!:eek:

In June and early July, I had mushrooms growing in my front yard as it was so wet. A couple dry weeks and the mushrooms were gone. I have a feeling they will be back. I don't mind though, as I have been seeding bare spots of the lawn.

I heard that. They also reported that people were stuck in their cars in Alton possibly due to electrical wires. I hope everyone is ok!

I just posted the following forecast on the WeatherCenter site.... and then noticed the TORNADO WARNING for the area between Wolfeborough and Conway. The storms are traveling north. Radar has indicated rotation within several of the storms.

Extremely wet and stormy weather will continue across the state today. Severe
thunderstorms are occurring and are particularly fast-moving. Many cells are
traveling from south to north at speeds up to 50 mph today. This will catch
you off-guard if you are not ready. Additionally, a tornado is possible in
this kind of meteorological environment. Even without tornadoes, today's severe
thunderstorms have already produced a lot of wind damage in this state.

Additionally, heavy rain means flooding will be a threat all day and into
tomorrow as rivers typically crest after the rain stops. Some are already
reaching flood stage and more are expected to do the same.

Stay tuned to TV weather reports or NOAA Weather Radio... or the National
Weather Service web site (www.nws.noaa.gov/er/gyx) for current warnings.
Your LOCAL radio station will also carry new weather warnings via the
Emergency Alert System.

This is all the result of the boundary between the muggy summer air to our
south and the Canadian air to our north parking itself over New England. The
Storm Prediction Center has placed much of New England in today's risk for
severe thunderstorms and mentions the threat of some storms becoming capable
of producing a tornado.

A cold front will push this activity out tomorrow afternoon and evening but
the weather will remain unsettled and our next truly nice day does not
appear likely until Tuesday. The better of the two upcoming weekend days
appears to be Saturday when warmth and humidity will be with us, but so
will a threat for showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and
evening.

The radar is showing some impressive reds. Hope all stay safe around the mountains and lakes. These have been some very impressive storms. We had a few trees struck by lightning and a garage that caught fire from the storms here in MA and our neighboring town had two people struck by lightning last night. Course then our daughter had to be at the Comcast center (former tweeter) for the concert and I had to keep calling her to make sure she was safe for the cell that came out of RI with the funnel cloud. Bad storms!!

It's 12:53 here in Meredith and the skies are the brightest they have been today. Almost looks clear except the rain is still falling. Maybe this is one of those calms before the storm (like we have not gotten enough)!!

WBZ radio reported a short while ago a tornado had briefly touched down (7 points?) near Concord. Over 100 homes damaged. They had very limited info as it had just happened. (I heard the report at 12:45)

Crazy weather again.saw reports of damage in Alton.WMUR reports 50-100 homes damaged in Epsom.Possible tornado.Wondering how the lake made it through.I had to park cars for a Fischer Cats this morning game and had to be out in that storm.Yikes,that was not fun!

WMUR is live with reports on extensive damage in Alton, Wolfeboro and Epsom. Epsom FD is reporting 50-100 homes damaged including 1 "house collapse"

Just saw some footage on WMUR (thanks for the heads up, SteveA). Entire homes destroyed. Trees and power lines down everywhere. I hope all is well with everyone. My best to any families who may be affected by this.

Anyone have info if road conditions/possible closures through Alton?

I have not heard anything but WMUR is covering Epson for the most part, given the damage there and I haven't heard details on Alton

I'm remote right now down here in Phila, but can anyone tell me if things are OK up in Moultonborough?

And Puff, looks like the storm skirted 109 and that side of the lake and MBoro is ok. We got lots of rain, but nothing like what Wolfeboro or Alton has seen. The damage in Epsom looks pretty harsh in places. Of course I haven't gone and looked in my basement yet. I don't want to know.

John Lynch has declared a state of emergency in Merrimack, Strafford, Belknap, Carroll and Rockingham counties. Emergency crews are responding to heavy damage caused by a line of storms from Deerfield and Epsom northeast through Barnstead to Wolfeboro and Alton. One person is confirmed dead near Northwood Lake in Epsom."

It was very strange here in Gilford. I don't remember ever hearing thunder like the type I heard today. Long, long, long rumbles.. 20-30 seconds. Maybe it was just echoes off the mountains? But even stranger was no lightning. I've always used the old "1 mississippi" trick to figure out how close a storm is. I would have run out of "mississippi's" today.

Moultonborough seems to be OK

WMUR just reported that they have no report on any deaths due to these storms.

Has anyone any news on damage on any of the islands on Winni (Rattlesnake, Ship, Moose, Diamond, Barndoor, etc)?

WMUR just reported they have 1 confirmed fatality in Epsom

They continue to report most of the damage south of Alton Center
No current reports of damage North of Alton Center

Unfortunately there has been a confirmed death in Epsom in a collapsed house according to WMUR

Near Miss
 

We're in West Alton near Minge Cove, and our area, including the islands you listed, did not incur any wind damage today. In fact, while we got heavy rains today, we got no high winds at any time.

Watching WMUR and cannot believe the destruction. Sad to hear there is a death associated with this weather. Unbelievable storm damage.

With all the rain we have been getting and the chance you may have skipped a weekend or two at the lake. Don't forget to make sure your boat has enough line for the lake to rise. It is getting higher every day. We are also growing concerned about our PWC on the lift and have tied it in place in case the winds pick up from the North. RG reported and video taped the waves going 6 inches over the top of our dock last Friday. Now the water is even higher. Be safe.

WMUR was dissed by the Epsom Fire Chief as far as I am concerned. I was watching channel 9 but I switched to the channel 13 news to see if anything else was happening in Maine. Then they showed the news woman from Maine standing with the Epsom chief in the middle of the destruction while the channel 9 people were still saying they weren't allowed in. So, did the Channel 13 people sneek in from over the border or what? How did they get in when our own news people couldn't? I'd be ticked if I were them (Channel 9 I mean)......:rolleye1:

For the suspected tornado storm of Alton-Wolfeborough, Peak gust at Black Cat was 32 mph from the SE just before it crossed the lake well to the SE. That was the peak gust for the day until later when it shifted to SW and gusted to 44 mph, matching the peak for the month.

Most of the big activity came from a train of storms that moved rapidly on a South to North course from the North Shore of MA to the Conway area. The whole train gradually shifted east, prompting the tornado watch in Maine. The focus of today's freakish activity was from southern NH to the far southeast end of the lake, and then it shifted to the Maine border.

My concern now is that the trees have now had a lot of frequent stress this summer and have not had time to recover. I have noticed a trend in the last three big storm threats:

June 22, 75 mph from the NW- twigs down.

July 2, 60 mph from the S- small branches down.

July 18, 44 mph from the N- large branches down.

It's probably similar to when your muscles are stressed from lifting weights. You get sore because there are little tears in each fiber. You wait to recover them, and they come back stronger. If you don't wait, you injure yourself by making the tears bigger. I would imagine the trees, being living tissue like your muscles, probably function the same way when stressed. And this summer, they're being forced into exercise before they've recovered from the last workout.

I think as this summer goes on, and the severe weather trend continues, we will see trees and branches coming down at lower wind speeds. Also, with the ground now saturated, uprooting is going to become a bigger issue. If what's holding the roots in place turns to mush, it doesn't take much wind to push the whole tree right over. Especially in summertime when leaves act as sails and pine trees have 100% of their needles.

I am planning to drive up to the lake today from Dover....does anyone know if route 16N from Dover to Rochester, and route 11W from Rochester up through Alton and Gilford are open? Thanks.

My brother is driving up to Alton from Pembroke to check on our cabin...I heard that most damage was along Rt 11 and 28... Anyone know about traffic conditions (as he'll take 28 all the way to the Circle from Pembroke).
