Pier 19 Store Closing

I've heard that the Pier 19 store is closing for good after this weekend. Any suggestions for another port of call in that area for those bread/milk/eggs/newspaper runs and ice cream fixes? Is there anything like that at Melvin Village?

My source tells me the store is on the market - maybe someone will keep it going?

Orion 10-09-2008 05:04 PM

Should be a good spot!

Maybe it's the seasonal nature of that store, but it seems that it should be straightforward to be able to make a go of it there, unless the overhead costs are extreme. There is a captive audience with the private docks there and it is the only area within 8 miles (by boat) to go for food, ice cream, beer, snacks, burgers, etc. It also is convenient for all those islanders in the Moultonborough/Tuftonboro with a dock for boaters to come in and buy. There's also the gas pumps! The current store wasn't even using all of the facility, so there was a lot more room to put more durable goods as a convenience/attraction. If I was looking for a business I would give it a go.

More info please...............

Now there's an interesting thought. Never having been there I am totally unfamiliar with the property.......... so it's strictly seasonal? Anyone know if there are living quarters on the premises? Or if it's truly listed and with whom? Thanks in advance.

(Please note -- I am a licensed real estate agent, albeit "inactive" status -- Code of Ethics and my own personal ethics dictate that I disclose this fact.)

I'm unclear on whether this is a normal seasonal shutdown or that the store will not re-open in the spring. Can you clarify?

The people operating the store are relocating out of state. The building is owned by Buddy Leroux's estate I heard and is for sale.

It's been open year-round under the current management/ownership, so this sounds permanent. Hopefully someone will pick it up, although with credit markets are awful as they are, it could be tough to get the funds necessary to get a viable market off the ground.

Shame. But I bet it'll be back. After all, there's really nothing between Skelley's and Wolfeboro.

Pier 19

The store is closing for the winter...There have been other winters, in the past, when the store has closed. I think everyone will agree that this has not been the best summer for many area merchants, so the decision to close for the winter is probably a good one. The current manager is relocating, but the Le Roux family may reopen in the Spring. I don't believe any decision has been made to permanently close the store at this time.

Grant 10-13-2008 09:25 PM

Thanks for the info. Yes, it's been a tough year across the board. Here's hoping it re-opens. I can't imagine it wouldn't. It's such a great location, and has certainly saved us over the course of many years.

JTA 10-14-2008 08:36 AM

Many of us in the Tuftonboro Island area have used the Pier 19 store for many years and it's a great convenience. If the store business plus property is up for sale, it may be a case of the land being worth more than a seasonal convenience store can support (in mortgage, etc.). Most of us hope it will reopen.

Orion 10-14-2008 11:00 AM

latest rumor

Lates I've heard, not confirmed, is that they are looking for a buyer, but if none found by Spring, the current operator will reopen in Spring. Hope so!

Store

How about the place on 109A that (I think) is also the post office? It's been there forever.

P.S. Grant, wassup with the plane next to your place?

Zee 10-15-2008 07:07 PM

Looniac, I think you are referring to the Center Tuftonboro Store and post office on 109A. Other than Skelley's and Pier 19, it is the only convenience store in Tuftonboro. Unfortunately it is easily a couple of miles away from the lake shore. Years ago there was a small store in Melvin Village on rt. 109 but that hasn't been open for a "dog's age".

Pier 19 Store

Does anyone know who this business is listed through?

Good News

To anyone on the East Side of the lake and the Tuftonboro Island area.
GOOD NEWS:

From the Cow Island Website Forum:

"03-24-2009 04:26 PM ET (US) Pier 19 Store - rumor is true. Roger and Jan will be running the store again this summer."

Grant 03-25-2009 09:10 PM

Can I get an AMEN from the congregation?!??

Ah, yes, and for those of us within a couple of miles of this store, this is very, very good news. I promise to patronize early and often...beginning in a few weeks, if it's open...

Thanks for the heads up. Spread the word.

dmjr 03-30-2009 08:15 AM

Open in 2009

Has anyone heard if Pier 19 will be open this summer? I have heard that they are not going to be open and I have also heard they are just going to open part time. Any ideas?

Ok, thanks, my bad the whole page did not load and I did not see it.

KTO 03-31-2009 01:08 AM

Is that the one with the snack bar area on the side? If so, that's my favorite place to jetski to lunch with my friends! It better be open! :)

hazelnut 03-31-2009 06:24 AM

KTO,

Yes it has a snack bar, Ice Cream, etc. located in Tuftonboro at 19 Mile Bay.

Islander2 03-31-2009 06:05 PM

Openning soon? I hope...

Anyone been to 19 Mile Bay this weekend, to see if the store is open, or if any they are getting ready to open? With the ice as it is, it wont be long, and it will take a bit of time to get the store ready to open.

Got to get back to waxing the boat....

RPM 04-23-2009 10:07 AM

That was a close one!

Summer, Saturday morning. 10 to14 people jam into my deck boat( v hull )
WE leave Morrison cove with everything necessary to spend a day on the most beautiful lake in the world. But ,alas, our coolers and picnic baskets are empty
FEAR NOT !. 10 minuets later we putt ,with Dow island to our starboard and Nine Acre to our port, toward the Graveyard. We pass, with the Graveyard to our right and Pistol Island to our left, out into more open waters. AND THERE IT IS!
PIER 19. AN oases in the middle of Utopia.WE leave PIER 19 coolers stocked full, bags of Chester fried chicken.subs, pizza, and snacks.( I know not exactly a low fat cruise ) But who cares ?!.
Sunday .After the cookout, we now take 2 boats over to PIER 19, for ice cream. It doesn't get any better than this Folks. Please dont scare us again.

Lakewinn1 04-23-2009 10:12 AM

Pier 19

What are the gas prices over there?

Islander2 04-23-2009 01:17 PM

Not open yet...

Lakewinn1,

RPM's post starts "Summer", and since Summer has not yet arrived... nothing yet. Was at the store Friday and Sunday, and no one around, and no lights on. Don't know when or if they will open. Lots of fishing activity out front, on the "private" docks, but nothing going on at the store. Hope it opens soon, as it is convenient.

Lakewinn1 04-23-2009 02:47 PM

Pier 19

Islander2 ... Thanks for the update please keep us posted as to activity... Thanks again

Lakesrider 04-24-2009 07:01 AM

Just curious, if it does not open will there still be gas?

Just Wonderin 04-27-2009 02:41 AM

Probably not...

If Pier 19 Convenience doesn't open, my guess is that there will be no gas either, since it ran through the store...but, rumor has it, that the store is supposed to open...mid May perhaps.

Dog's Ear 04-27-2009 09:41 AM

Pier 19 Store

The store will open on May 15th. I believe the gas docks will be open as well.
