Winter Restaurants
Does any body have a list of the restaurants in the Lake Winni. region that are open all winter long? Even a partial list will do. Thanks.
|
Open restaurants
Village Kitchen, the Woodshed, the Corner House, Lago, Lakeside Grill, and Abondante are a few but certainly not all that are open on the north side of Winni.
|
Alby: I'm guessing from your photoposts that you are in the Gilford area. My favorites in that neck of the woods that are open in the Winter include; ELLACOYA BARN & GRILLE, LYON'S DEN (currently closed for a week or two) and the WILLIAM TELL INN .
|
What days?
If you are asking about weekend dining then you are probably OK. However, several of these restaurants cut their open days in the winter, often closing Mon - Wed or running limited hours. Call to make sure during the week.
|
Year round list of restaurants
Adding to McDude's list in Gilford is Patrick's Pub. (The William Tell is open Wed. - Sun. during the winter and is definitely a favorite).
New Durham has Johnson's (near the Alton line) and Alton has JP's (Chinese) and the Dockside. Wolfeboro has the Wolfeboro Inn and Garwoods. I'm not sure if the Inn will be undergoing renovations this fall/winter. |
Winter Restaurants
Canoe,Lago,George's,and Mike Loves place on Route 25 in CH. The name escapes me right now

They have done a nice job w/ the inside as well. |
Buckey's in Mboro and the Pine Cone Cafe are open year round as well.
|
Talked to Ann and they are closed till Jan. 11th

I thought I was having a senior moment!

If I remember correctly, Dan closed the Dockside for a month or two during renovations last winter.
But yes he is closing this winter due to the economy and it is up for sale. |
Shibley's closed for now

And Riverrat is correct... I believe Dockside closed around Thanksgiving and didn't reopen until at least February. |
Toward Laconia
There are a number of restaurants open in the winter toward/in Laconia. This is clearly not a complete list:
Years back most of the good restaurants were seasonal. I think that it is very difficult to make it for most restaurants if they are only open during the summer. The Weirs restaurants do tend to be the most seasonal. These days there are plenty of options for the winter. Jetskier:cool: |
Matthews?
Where is Matthews? Do you mean Michaels?
|
Yes
Sorry, that one has had too many name changes and owners. :D

We are not in a hurry either. But it was really ridiculously slow. We're talking slooooooooooow..... Did I mention slow? :D |
Didn't know the forum could be used to advertise.......maybe there should a thread for that so that we can all get on board.Whatta ya' say,Don.....is it ok to plug our specials, menu and so forth,or do you want to keep it as is?
|

My preference is that business owners answer the question at hand and refer readers to their Web site for more information. |
My wife and I like to go out to eat about 3 to 4 times a wk but it's tough when most of the restaurants are only open Thurs to Sat or Fri to Sunday. I can see them complaining as to lack of business but when you eat there one night and go back the same night a week later to find them closed you kind of give up hope. We liked 51 Mill but gave up on them and really liked the Barn Door but now they don't seem reliable either. And the Lobster Pound's too far away.

Not bad for us

new years eve party!
hey sam, did I mention we are having a big new years eve party at the pound? its gonna be great, you should come!
I thought you guys wanted to know what was going on in the area this winter? I also thought you like when the owners check in and let you know what is going on with their establishments? any owner would be a fool not to use the forum as a tool to spread the word about their business, after all, you guys are free to say anything you want about us right? next time when I respond to a post on the forum, I will make sure to write only HALF, of what I need to say and I will let you guys look up the rest. I will also make it as cryptic as possible so it doesnt sound anything like self advertising. see everybody on New Years Eve! |
Interesting
WOW........I think someone just shot themselves in the foot.......How do you say.... Open mouth insert foot??????

Advertising businesses here
As a business who is strictly monitored for not advertising via the forum, I take offense at Mike's posting and followup, in your face, uppercase post for New Years.
|
Interesting response.................

sarcasim
my post to sam was complete sarcasim. for those of you who misunderstood it, I was just tying to say no matter what you write on this forum, people are quick to criticize. my first post about what is going on at the pound this winter was just meant to be informative. a bunch of other resturants were mentioned and I wanted to add our name to the list. it wasn't meant to be an advertisement. it amazes me that even when you give people exactly what you think they want on this forum, you get negative feedback. I actually thought people would say, hey mike, thanks for the info. I guess I should have known better.
|
Not Everyone!

It is generally appreciated when owners post and respond to feedback on this forum. Jetskier:cool: |
OK, Thank You.

That being said, thanks for the information, and best of luck with the New Year's party! :D |
Why do you think so little of us
Quote:
Hey Mike, Why if you have such a low opinion of this forum and those who post on it do you even bother with us? I don't find your attitude very helpful, as a small businessman myself I can't imagine why you would post such comments. In a struggling ecomomy and a slow time of year for your industry why do all you can to p*ss potential customers off with your attitude? |
We're Open
Just in case anyone forgot the original question... The Lyons' Den is open for the winter - we serve lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. (8 p.m. on Sunday) - we still have some openings for holiday parties through December and we are planning a GREAT New Year's Eve menu.
|
Thanks,Lakesregion,I also, thought that was a little rude.I was simply suggesting that if the forum was going to be used as an advertising vehicle, that everyone should be allowed to do it.I thought that the restaurant thread was for consumers to rate different restaurants, pro or con. Also,it's reasonable for owners to respond to a post as many of us have done in the past.If you look through the archives, you'll be hard pressed to find an owner who has plugged his menu, specials, hours and so forth......if this was allowed this thread would be choked with advertising.
Mike seems a little touchy......going to be a lo-o-o-o-ng winter. |
and so it continues
Gotta love the restaurant threads....run a close second to the now closed "speed limit" threads. Always informative, and usually very entertaining. I love the sarcasm, but sometimes people can't take it, and it turns mean. This, I can do without.
Mike Ray's comment "you guys can say what you want about us"...not really sure why, but that single statement sort of rubs me the wrong way. Did not know this was an "us against them" forum". And I truly love his place. Great spot, and I stayed away until late August...my loss. But, I don't know....lighten up a bit I guess. Samiam is a long time member, and does not deserve the slap. On another note...glad LP is open this winter. I thought they were closed. Going to visit in January during our stay while skiing Gunstock. Great reason to visit the Weirs in winter. |
Restaurant owners, buy a banner ad from the webmaster.
I promise to support restauranteers who support my favorite website. |
Unfortuantly,Mike Ray is right..
I am not affiliated with any restaurants...but some one will either criticize me for that or disagree with that statement..
but no matter what someone says here there is always an abundance of people ready ,willing and more than able to criticize...if he said black , 3 people would complain that he should have said white ,he says left and 5 people will blather on and on about how right was the correct answer... everyone here has an opinion ,as it should be,,,but when someone's differs even slightly from your own you are all over them .. you are part of a vicious circle ,standing in line ,patting each other on the back ... that is why I haven't been here for the better part of a year !!..and won't be again Jet skier ..you say that not everyone here is an a$****e.. So ,you are saying that some of the people here are... care to elaborate ?? If it walks like a duck and swims like a duck ...who here has webbed feet ??????? Now you all get in a neat line and you can take your turns critisizing me ... rattleing on in your self aggrandizing way |
Mike
Mike - you probably know this:
(from twenty years of being a chef across the country) 25% will rave about your place (food) 25% will bitch about your place (see above) 50% won't say a thing Restaurants are a lot like church - when you change the minister (chef), 10% of the congregants (customers) leave. People are passionate about our business. My ex-father-in-law would stop going to the Corner House if they ever change the crab cake recipe. My best friend never orders from a regular menu - always orders specials (and usually the most "out-there" item). When I visited New Orleans after Katrina to meet restaurateurs completely affected and shut down - many of them told a simple story. The locals went to the restaurants to meet their neighbors - before they went to the churches. It seems the restaurateurs were the ones that stayed. What I'm trying to say is that our restaurants and churches are the cornerstones of society. They both are spaces for celebrations, mourning, grieving and companionship. As hospitality professionals sometimes it can be hard to remember that. Sometimes it can be hard to remember that our critics can be our best customers. |
Well it looks like we were doing good and had a great informative thread going until we reached post #23 and than it went downhill pretty fast after that. Luckily we are not the Webmaster or Moderator of this forum and should not be stressed about what is allowed here or not, this is not our job it is Don's and I would not want it.
Therefore we should let Don do his job as best as he can and we can try to address the topic of the thread as best we can as forum members. So I would like to answer the original question with, We tried Hector's restaurant last night and was delighted with the experience, I am a occassional visitor to Laconia and never noticed this restaurant before and we were looking for someplace to eat close to downtown so it was great and is open all year around. |

Perfect, thanks! And there I was looking for something with the word "rules" on the menu bar!!
To get back on track... for a lunch place open all year long I love the Gourmet Food Barn in Belmont! |
Another of my favorites open all year....
Patrick's Pub & Eatery.
website; http://www.patrickspub.com/menu.htm Also, a great story in the Weirs Times about Patrick's. http://www.weirs.com/archivepdfs/wtimes111308.pdf after download, go to page 40. I'm just an old Happy customer. Terry |
Winter Restaurants
I own Tuscany Bistro located in (what used to be) the Tamarack dining hall. We're open Thursday thru Sunday and we have TERRIFIC pizza along with subs and pasta dinners. We also have a buy-one-get-one pizza coupon on the back of the Gilford Shaws register reciept. If this is too much like an advert, I'll take it off. Did I mention we have great pizza?
|
I agree
Your pizza is the best in the area. Alot like the original Papa Gino's in Boston.
|
Thanks Soxie, I appreciate that - Always great to hear!

Yes, that's us also. There's a slight difference in the pizza as the Bistro has a different type of oven but we use the same fresh dough, make our own sauce etc.
|
The Winnipesaukee Masons in Alton has a super Breakfast Buffet every third Sunday of the month and although I am not affiliated with them we enjoy their buffet so much that we braved the storm this last Sunday to get to it. Abundant food and selection for a reasonable price, not to mention, nice people.

Abondante
We decided to give Abondante a try this past Friday evening. We came in a bit early and the restaurant was pretty quiet. They had a wine tasting starting at 7 and the place did start to fill up.
The atmosphere is quaint and the food was very good. The only complaint was that it was a bit cold; a couple next to us had a space heater. We will certainly be back; we are going to make a point of catching them for a wine tasting. Jetskier:cool: |
This past Friday we decided to try out the Pine Cone Restaurant in Melvin Village, we have been wanting to for quite sometime now. The food, service and prices were very acceptable. But we froze the whole time we were there. We asked to sit by one of the gas fireplaces and we did, we were told that they were controlled by a thermostat and could not be turned on manually without messing them up, and that when it got cool enough it would start. Well we were there for 1 1/2 hours friday night which was cold and windy and very drafty and with our jackets on the whole time and it never came on. But we were assured it would eventually, I inquired to as what day that would be. Unfortunately, even though all else was fine, we will not be rushing back there until warm weather.

Menu for Villiage Kitchen
Does anyone know if Villiage Kitchen has a web-site where I could view their menu? Or could anyone possibly post a menu? Thank you.
|
Vk
I could not find one straight off, Maybe Samiam will chime in.
I go to the VK a few times a month and always get a good homecooked style meal- love those Turkey croquettes! |
I don't go there often but when i drive by in the summer there is always a line getting in so must be real good value

Christmas Island
Did CI close for the winter?

Pool table at Buckey's
Hi, I was in Buckey's (as I frequently am) and saw they added a pool table located in a separate room. Nice little coin operated 7'er. There is a dart board in there as well.
It is a nice room and essentially helps expand the bar a bit - and on many nights the bar is busy (good busy but still busy) so the extra space is great. If you are looking to play a game or two, check out Buck's |

All Wolfeboro restaurants are open for the winter except Dockside. Some have a shorter schedule and only open part of the week, so check before going.
