NH Temporary paper licenses and the TSA
 

I had to renew my drivers license, and as you know, NH now issues a paper temporary license while they submit your personal data to the Feds for approval, etc, etc, etc. So, my question is:

Has anyone used your paper license as identification in an airport? NH claims there is no problem with the local airports (ME/NH/MA) but has no info on out of the region. I'd be going down south.

My passport has expired, and I've lost my birth cert, so that is no help, lol. The state also said if I bring old expired documention (old original DL or old passport), that is a violation of terrorist laws, and I'd go to jail. Don't know the truth of it, and I don't care to try.

Also, can anyone tell me how long it took from their paper license to a real one coming in the mail?

I just returned from sunny FLA and at the West Palm beach airport TSA looked at my passport with a magnifying glass!
I would call TSA and see what they say about the paper ID's.

They told me 60 days for my actual to come, I had it in less than 2 weeks. I would keep your old license handy in the meantime. They did not take mine.

They say 30-60 days, but I've heard of some taking longer yet, I got mine in less than 30 days within the last month.

They took and kept our old licenses (different state). Strange.

"This new procedure will not affect passengers that may have misplaced, lost or otherwise do not have ID but are cooperative with officers. Cooperative passengers without ID may be subjected to additional screening protocols, including enhanced physical screening, enhanced carry-on and/or checked baggage screening, interviews with behavior detection or law enforcement officers and other measures."


If I am interpreting that correctly they will let you fly as long as you submit to invasive searches. A temporary ID is better than no ID.

Email them and get a response in writing. You can take their response to the airport for peace of mind.

Earlier this year the guidance from the State and TSA was to just bring both your old license and the temporary one to the screener. With both in hand they know you have a legit ID (albeit expired) and will understand why you have the temporary paper version.

I've had a paper license since 10/29 and it's real fun using it for just writing a check... I can't imagine using it at an airport! (Yes, the expired one proved more legit.) I'd think for $50 for the renewal, you should get a gold-plated license!

I got my license renewed 3 weeks ago at the Rochester office. I called the DMV in Concord before, as I was concerned about the TSA...we are flying to the FL Keys for Thanksgiving. They said I would be able to keep my old license, but the new one would arrive in 2 weeks. True to their word, the new one came in exactly 2 weeks.

OK, I have to ask -- what's the TSA?

Expiration dates on licenses as IDs are kind of funny. You don't stop being you just because your permit to operate a motor vehicle has lapsed.

I could use my passport as backup ID, and when I'm traveling a distance I bring my passport with me in my briefcase, just in case my wallet gets lost or stolen. At least then I have enough ID to get back home without having to jump through hoops.

State law prohibits having more than one valid license at a time. If you move from another state and have a valid license from there, it must be surrendered when your NH license is issued.

Renewing your NH license is a bit different, since your old one and your new one are one and the same, but with different expiration dates.

Some people like to keep their old ones for ID because they like the picture better.;)
