As usual, Mother Nature has cleaned off the glass window on the WeirsCAM enclosure. Even in the coldest temperatures a little sunshine usually does the job.
Every year I get a few messages asking me to clean the ice off the camera. For those who aren't familiar with where it is mounted, the camera is located on the 3rd floor roof of the Winnipesaukee Pier at Weirs Beach. During the winter I can't access it at all. The pier is locked up tight and even if I could get in reaching the camera would be very treacherous. In good weather I have to take a ladder up to a fire escape on the second floor, carefully position it on a narrow walkway and climb to the roof. Right now it would be suicidal to attempt that.
This is the 10th year I've operated a camera in that location. Every winter I cross my fingers that it will make it through the winter and so far it always has. I can restart and manage the camera remotely so I can fix most problems short of a total camera or cable failure. Usually the cable Internet service will fail at some point during the winter and Bob Andrews of Anchor Marine has always gone over to take care of it.
When you do see the camera covered by ice just wait for some sunshine to take care of the problem.
ps I'll be swapping out the current camera in the spring with a newer model that should give us a better picture and take care of the annoying herring bone problem that pops up intermittantly. After repair the old camera may replace the existing Anchor Marine CAM which is ancient by today's standards.
