Ice fishing basics?

Can anyone point me towards a good resource on ice fishing basics? I'd like to give it a whirl this winter but have never been before and would rather have a few pointers rather than just winging it. Also, any advice on getting started without breaking the bank would be appreciated!

Thanks...

Ice fishing

Hi Matt - are you a long time Middletown resident? I grew up in Topsfield. Glad to hear your interst in ice fishing..its a great way to enjoy the outdoors in winter. Here are some links to get you started.

Need to learn a few more rules but the key things you'll need to know/have on Winni

1. two tip ups per person (on water without lake trout you can have 6..if you are going out with kids and want to make sure you have some action then maybe going to a small lake/pond wher you can use 6 traps/person might make sense)

2. Looks like by the end of this week the ice will be 12''+inches so I highly recommend getting access to a gas auger..unless you're interested in a real work out using a manual auger.

Have fun

Try this link

www.fishlakewinni.com

Post some questions there and you'll get ample help. Might even be able to hook up with a group and learn first-hand!

And there will be a class during the fishing derby too.

Good luck!

As long as it is sharp, a hand cranked ice auger with a 4" diameter gets the job done. 18" of ice takes less than five minutes. 10" of ice takes about two minutes.

Also, a hand powered, tree pruning saw with large teeth will slice through ice. Ditto for a chain saw.
