Question about Bobhouses
I have just completed my periodic tour of the lake webcams and have a question about the little fishing huts. I see them on the Alton Bay webcams, but on none of the others.
Does anyone put the bobhouses on Wolfeboro Bay? Meredith Bay? Anywhere else? Just curious! It looks COOOOOOOOLD up there!:eek::eek: nj2nh |

Meridith bay gets real crowded come derby time. This year will be one of the best as far as crowds go. The ice will be real thick which will get everyone out there. My brother is putting our hut out this weekend or next weekend.

Once there is solid ice most everywhere, the bobhouses do scatter far and wide. The greatest density however is tied to ease of lake access as well as what areas are first to have safe ice. Alton Bay has easy access with a public ramp and the bay area normally has safe ice earlier than other areas. So there is normally a good group out there, many claim the same location year after year.
Right now there is a small group near Ellacoya Park as there is easy access to the ice there. And so it goes around the lake. |
Meredith Bay
Meredith Bay is home to over 20 Bobhouses as of this morning. When I drove through town this morning at 8AM, there was a line of several very dedicated fishermen getting ready to launch their Bobhouses in -11 degree weather. I also saw at least one pickup truck out there parked next to it's Bobhouse. I guess we'll be seeing Bobgarages next.:)

Centre Harbor
If we could get the MT. Washington cam in Centre Harbor turned around, you would see a multitude of bobhouses.:D

There were several Bobhouses at Moultonborough Beach yesterday. Today they were all gone??????????? Same thing happened last week or so in Center Harbor. Is this concern for the safety of the ice?

Where have they all gone
I have been viewing the bay with the web cams and I noticed that there are less and less Bob houses out on the ice. Have all the fish headed north and there isn't anything left in the Bay or is it that the rain and the warm weather we had got people nervous and pulled the houses off of the lake or were they there mainly for the derby??? I also noticed that the runway hasn't been plowed for a couple storms. Is that saying that they only want it for the 2 special weekends??:)

While the ice may be OK for the bob house for another few weeks it might not be OK for the truck needed to tow it off the ice for much longer. Better not to risk dumping the truck into the lake or getting it stuck in slush. No tow services on the ice to pull you out.
Also most of the bitter cold days are gone so a bob house is not needed as much. Just sit in the ice in that nice March sun. :D |

I removed my shanty last Saturday, a couple of weeks earlier than normal. But the time was right, the surface was hard and the friends were handy. On Alton Bay one of the most important equation when determining whether or not to yank the bobhouse is the "Boat Launch" as it is the main source of gettig it on or off. This year the lauch has held up very well compared to previous years, partly due to a blockade place at the bottom of it during winter carnival.

Wboro
The Wolfeboro Town Docks cam shows several bobhouses, stretching from over by Brewster Beach, out to what appears to be the end of the Bay.
