Ice Ridges
Something struck me as odd, there are no Ice Ridges around Rattlesnake, usually there is at least one on the Alton end of the Island. Also on our ride to Locke Island we didn't encounter any, I think one usually runs from Ellacoya to Welch.
Are there any on the lake so far ? |
Why?
We rode out of Lees Mills out into Moultonborough Bay on sunday and where there normally be a couple of monsters, there were none. Perhaps someone on this forum can explain why? Snow cover?

ice shards
An earlier thread on the lake freezing talked about ice shards sticking almost straight up in areas around Rattlesnake. Also, driving on Rte 11 back then, I noticed what could have been shards off of Ames Farm, and also in Alton Bay both by Echo Point and then down by Sandy Point. They seemed to be caused by thin sheets of ice forming which were then destroyed by high winds. Finally we got the one good cold snap we needed, and that froze the ice solid, and left these pushed up shards.
Now we have had snow, and quite a bit of it. There may be some pressure ridges under it along with the shards. Not being an expert on pressure ridges ( I know not to hit them, if at all possible:)), but with the consistently cold temps, no thaw, perhaps there is not the movement of ice plates like we have had in the past few years. Just a thought. |

It will be interesting to see if they start appearing this coming weekend. I suspect that any changes in lake level have a lot to do with them also. Assuming (and hoping) the thaw predicted for this coming weekend happens, I would expect the level to rise some, which will cause some shifting in the ice pack. |

Rode to Sheps last weekend and I cam from Patrician Shores which is coming from Center Harbor. I was meeting a friend out there and I didn't see any ridges.
