Wolfeboro Inn????

I know they are undergoing renovations, but I heard yesterday they laid off all the employees, and have, or are selling the Inn. Not to reopen? I see alot going on there construction-wise. But I would have thought they would have the same emplyoyees come back at least? Hmmm....

Seasonal businesses who want to retain employees often times will lay off those employees for a period of time when it is not feasible to pay them their normal wage. This enables them to collect unemployment benefits, and when the business is ready for them, they hire them back.

In this case, it is a business undergoing renovation, and may be something that has been done to allow employees to obtain some money while the business is closed.

This article announces a new general manager and briefly mentions the renovations. No mention of selling the property.

Anything New?

Anybody have any updating info on the Wolfeboro Inn? When it reopen? Where are they in their renovations?

no-engine 03-23-2009 03:48 PM

Best suggestion is email or call the general manager. Karen is a great lady.

As I understand it, the Inn will reopen around the first of May. I have a feeling it is going to be awesome!

I always enjoyed their bar.. the newer one down at the parking lot level was very nice as well. I hope it is still there this summer.. Great to take the boat over and walk up to.

Another indication they are getting the staff ready.

I emailed her yesterday and she said she had no idea how that rumor got started and that they are fully on schedule and hope to start taking back the new employees in mid April and plan to open in May.

It's Ocean Bank and Huggins Hospital that's laying off people. 13 at HH - 7 at OB

Lakesrider 04-01-2009 07:45 AM

Huggins is another one that puzzles me. They are going to be opening a new building, yet they are laying off? Why wouldn't you just keep them until the new one opens. These people are going to collect unemployment now and cost them more money anyway. Then they will need to hire people back when the new wing opens? And are you telling me that they are opening a multi-million dollar facility but don't have the money to keep employees. That is one doomed Hospital if that is true! Silly!

tis 04-01-2009 07:50 AM

There are not going to be any new beds in the new hospital so if they don't need help now, they won't need help when the new building is done. I also was very surprised when I heard the hospital is not going to hold more patients. I was also disappointed that it is not going to have a walk in clinic, but then I suppose it would compete with the emergency room.

Lakepilot 04-01-2009 08:37 AM

My understanding is that Huggins receives federal money which limits them to being a certain type of hospital. Therefore they can't have more beds then they have now. They are not the type of hospital that is geared towards longer stays. They handle primarily accidents or other emergency situations.

Walk in Clinic

Huggins owns Alton Family Medical, which is building a new facility behind McDonald's at the Alton Circle. I understand that there will be a walk in clinic there.

More Huggins Hospital Layoffs

I just learned today they are closing their maternity ward all together and expect more layoffs because of it. That makes Wolfeboro's closest maternity ward Laconia now or if you have troubles Mary Hitchcock where I had my children. Not an easy jaunt when you're very pregnant.

Yes, I have heard that too, but wish we could have one right in Wolfeboro.
