MOULTONBOROUGH - A buried SUV has been found on the property where a man was arrested and charged with assaulting his wife.

On Thursday, the Moultonborough Police Department issued a statement saying police with a spill response investigator from the Department of Environmental Services executed a search warrant on the property at 26 Dufault Road after receiving information that a sports utility vehicle had been buried on the property.

A large excavator brought to the scene by police pulled a 1998 Lincoln Navigator from 15 feet below the ground.

The DES investigator monitored the uncovering of the vehicle and, according to police, determined that there were no environmental concerns with a field meter giving no readings.

Police said the gas tank had been removed from the vehicle before it was buried, resulting in no gas leak, while a minimal transmission fluid leak was investigated.

Charges of failing to obtain a solid waste dumping permit are pending and police continue to investigate the case.

The address is the residence of 34-year-old Michael Salsman who was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of attempted second-degree murder. Police alleged Salsman attacked his wife with a butcher knife the night before.

Also at that address last year, authorities discovered $100,000 worth of heavy equipment that had been reported stolen.

It is unclear what connection, if any, Salsman has to Thursday's search. The property is owned by Andrew Alimonte, who has been charged with receiving stolen property.

Reports also say that court documents indicate it was Alimonte who grabbed the knife away from Salsman during the alleged attack.

I agree.....this story is very bizarre. Why bury it? And it was a Lincoln Navigator. That is NOT a small vehicle!

I would expect that the navigator was reported stolen and insurance was collected on it, or the vehicle was involved in the comission of a crime. Hit and run maybe?

Or the Police Dept. I wonder what else they could find if they kept digging.

I like the fact Alimonte had no idea the truck was buried in the yard. Hmm... something tells me there is much more to this story than has been reported, especially considering that he was busted not to long ago with 150K worth of stolen excavation equipment.

I don't think the guy knew it was there. I believe it was the guy that was arrested for the theft of the equipment that probably buried it there so it wouldn't be found. I think he must have stolen it for the gas tank!:laugh:

I don't know about that. Sounds as though they're sifting though the evidence now. But they did a good job at the beginning, so oil wouldn't leak and contaminate the place.

The environmental concerns are potentially serious. Especially with respect to the possible airborn particles that might be released, which could bring on boughts of heavy sneezing, lots of wheezing, and frequent coffin.

I watched the WMUR video and I can't understand why the cameraman wasn't allowed or just didn't get a better shot of the SUV being lauled out of the ground. The video is shot through a bunch of branchs that make it difficult to see.:confused:

With the gas tank removed even if it leaked oil it doesn't hold THAT MUCH that it would cause serious damage. Yes I realize oil is oil but c'mon 5 or 6 quarts?

I had a feeling this thread might go down the "pun" road.

Looks like we may have dusted-off a new pun thread. For direction we may need to unearth a good Navigator.

Where was Jimmy when all of this happened?

They say it all the time when their initial observations indicate as much. Skid marks or lack thereof, the degree of damage to the car and object(s) it hit, the presence or absence of alcohol odor on the driver and passenger all combine to allow police officers an initial assessment of the cause of an accident. Obviously accident reconstruction and tox screens will verify it.

...seatbelts save lives!
 

Excuse me while I redirect this thread just a little bit.

Was the victim wearing a seatbelt, and if not then would it have made a differance? If NH had a mandatory seat belt law, is there any reason to think he would have been using one?

If not wearing a seatbelt is outlawed, then only outlaws will wear seatbelts!
