Windy Out There
Just got off the phone with one of our forum members on Rattlesnake and the say the wind has really churned up the Broads and that there is spray like on the ocean. They had to re-secure the boat it is now so rough.
Does anyone else have a report on the weather change on the lake? |
Note to Self: Secure Boats During FAIR Weather
What didn't we have for weather today?
At dawn, it was slightly overcast, leading to a thin sun. That gave way to bright sun about 10 AM—and a flat water surface. I did some spray-painting in windless, sunny, conditions. :) Boat traffic picked up, but was light. :look: Then dark clouds dropped the temperature, so I picked up in preparation for possible rain. Then faint sprinkles, then a little later—a good, brief rain—then thunder! Then bright sun again :). Then the wind picked up...then it REALLY picked up , and now, as we approach sunset—it's clear skies, and just "very windy". (Under 20-kts.) Just due to the wind, a lot of silt from recent development has turned the water brown—out to about 75-feet from shore. Not a lot of flotsam and jetsam, but a big 1-foot diameter "winter-windfall" dead tree is thinking about leaving the shoreline. (Now that the lake has risen several inches these past few days). I checked the Beaufort Wind Scale for windspeed at the max, but the scales would only give about 30-Kts, and I'm sure we saw much higher than that. (Not double that, but higher than 30.) Now, what was the question again? :o |
hi Kenwe spent an hour tying things down. waves over the dock. We were filling a trash can with water on the dock when the power went out. No water from the hose but our shoes were plenty wet.NH coop estimates 11:31 tonight. Impressive precision. Next part of message said 'if you know why the power is out, please press 1'. LOLSeems to be slowing down.take care

Wind Tonight
Pretty bad out Moultonborough Neck/Long Island. Lost power for a bit. Wires out via tree down at Winaukee intersection. Branches everywhere. Driving is hazardous with all the debris in the road. Chairs in yard and umbrella toppled over. Hope you all have your boats tied up really well!

RG - Being water logged is one thing and no power too but so long as you both did not get washed off the dock or deck these things will pass. :) Today will be a better day.

Like a hurricane!
Certainly was windy over here on Smith's Point on the west side of the lake yesterday. Phew! Glad we didn't take the canoe out!
|
For a while there, the white caps were getting blown off the top into a big misty spray.....now, that's windy.
During the big winds, the Mount Washington, looking like it had all of two passengers on board, and a Marine Patrol 27' aluminum-rib, passed one another going in opposite directions right in the middle of the buoy 3 narrows. Probably a violation of the 150' rule.....but did the MP do a self-arrest :D............ lol! |

Long Island Beach yesterday afternoon.

Tis an ill wind that ....
With the wind blowing down the bay, we had a water rise of at least 6" plus the whitecaps. What was beach went underwater and the boat floated so high I had to go out and adjust the fenders (which were hanging uselessly over the dock). I'll have to check but some of the gusts must have been over 60 mph and not exactly short in duration either ! As of this morning all was back to normal except for the temperature. Had to check the calendar ... ayup it still said June ?!? I say we send this weather (and perhaps some of the ^&%^ geese) back to Canada ... where they belong !
|
Ah yes, the lovely geese! I also wish the wind had blown them away with cold weather, Mee! They are so pretty but what a mess they make! You cannot walk where they go! Talk about picking up the dog poop!

an understatement....

This is what's left of my dock on Sebago Lake in Maine after Sunday evening's event. My frontage faces about 8 miles of open water facing northwest. The descriptions of the waves and wind from the folks that were here defy comprehension. Blue Thunder Attachment 2631 Attachment 2632 Attachment 2633 |
water spray
Having been at camp this weekend, I found the water in Alton Bay near echo point to be interesting. The wind came up and the waves were short but full of white caps. and the one thing I seen a lot of which I don't recall in the past seeing much of is water spray. I couldn't find my camera, (I left it in the car) But it was interesting. Every time I thought of using my boat it got windy. But oh what a weekend. No kids, no wife nagging, no dog barking, just me myself and I. Nice quiet weekend.

Oh, Blue Thunder, what a shame. That is so discouraging. Do you think it can be repaired or it is done?

Has anyone ever been on the Mount during a big blow/ hurricane? I think that it would be cool to check out the lake at its worst possible conditions and be relatively safe doing it.
Here is one for you. I was out in my buddy’s 18’ fishing boat with a full canvas on a very windy day we were looking for calmer waters in winter harbor. We hit one wave that completely covered the boat! Everyone was completely soaked. After that we put our tales between our legs and headed for home. |
