Camp Kehonka memories
Was just going through some old keepsake boxes and found my Camp Kehonka "memoribilia." I found this site by googling the camp name. I am wondering if there is anyone else out there who might have been around Kehonka in the late 40's or early 50's.
When my family and I took a trip up there in the middle 80's, I was saddened to hear that the camp had just closed the year before. |

think you can find another camper on the South side of Locke Island nearest the MP end. jmho

Kehonka was girl's camp nestled behind Barndoor Island on the Alton/Wolfeboro line founded in 1902. From a camp brochure circa 1950-60. See more Kehonka memrabilia... The camp boasted 500 acres and almost a mile of shorefront! Barndoor Island may be seen at the top of the photo. The camp was established in 1902 and closed in 1985. It was owned by the Ballentine Family. |

I believe the camps property went down to Dr. McLeod's (of Melrose, MA) property (in Wolfeboro) with the covered boat dock facing Barndoor Is. The McLeod family still owns it. Nice sandy bottom and not too deep in that area. The camp land is now all built up - some of which are McMansions. |
Kehonka
My older sister attended Kehonka in 1955, or 56. I remember the blue uniforms, the Duck, and of course the Steelcraft. The old pictures, with everyone wearing bathing caps look a bit odd, now. I wonder, when, and why did bathing caps go out of fashion?
