:confused: Great picture. Looks like he is starting to store up for winter, rather than getting ready for summer. Bet the weather has all the wild life confused.

Sorry to ruin the cuteness party but the picture would be better if it was filled with water. After chipmunks ate through and tore out all the wires in my brand new seadoo trailer, it is all out war. This weeks after chipmunks got up inside my neighbors car and chewed some wires there also. After having stalled and towed, $500 later, I'm sure they are not too happy either. Seems like the chipmunk population has dramatically increased this year. Its time for me to put on my Bill Murray cap and go after those varments

yes they can be a nuisance but they are cute. I put a ring of mothballs around a truck I don't use much and have never had a problem. My neighbors that don't do that have has issues. Just a thought

We have seen zero chipmunks or squirrels since last year mid-summer. Very odd. Granted, a number of squirrels met their maker with a pellet gun. They're very destructive pests if they get into things. But not the chipmunks. They simply vanished.

Does Mink Islander have a mink on his island? I think they like to eat chipmunks and squirrels.

No shortage of chipmunks at my house. My cat keeps bringing us her "trophies" for all of us to enjoy. If she keeps up her current pace, I fear that we may be down to a couple hundred surviving chipmunks. :coolsm:

There's one that frequents my dock in the winter. I've seen it a few times and ample tracks in the snow. I usually find a huge pile of mussel shells beside one of the cribs in the spring as evidence that it was snacking there.

Bad Rap. (Redundant, Yes...)
 

1) Chipmunks get a bad rap: your damage was most likely inflicted by Red Squirrels—the teeth of which are "The Scourge of New England". :mad:

2) Since I've only experienced chipmunks in their native New Hampshire, I appreciate their habits. If I am so dense as to leave a birdseed container inside the front door, Chipmunks will attempt to chew the corner of the door to get to it. (Fortunately, they are extremely slow chewers).

Red Squirrels are the damage experts: they've even managed to damage an aluminum metal plate used to restore a 1¼" birdhouse opening previously damaged by Red Squirrels!

3) My BIL didn't get the message to bring in our two wet-mops when closing up last year. Nothing much is left of those two mops (upper-right corner of photo), but the yarns did show up in two ratty Red Squirrel nests under the cottage.

(Chipmunks only make neat burrows in the ground—they don't make ratty nests—yes, that is a White Pine seedling "in-training" centered in the same photograph).

4) "My" chipmunks come racing to a whistle—and one, to his name! Also, they are very easy to feed by hand. (Photo 2)

My experience has been the same as APS reguarding red squirrels as the bad guys.
P.S. how come you have nail polish on your toenail APS?:laugh:

My little fury friends, I look for them all the time, I expect them to put on a hat, grab a cane and do a fred astaire dance. When I was growing up we had a little toy fox terrior. He loved to chase them little critters, which was fine until one day he came down the stairs in a rush turned the conor and ran smack into a Pine Tree. Nope the tree did not move. To our knowledge he only caught one, and it was our neighbors pet. (sort of) the chipmunk lived but not with a tail. Our little dog was just about 17 years old at the time.:cool:

better yet....
 

I'm buying a high powered pellet gun, shooting the varmits and then I'm going to stuff them and pose them like AnnaLee dolls. With the amount of them out there, I'm sure I can be mass producing in a month or so. And then in 5 years, sub them out to China.

Anyone who thinks dogs can't communicate...take a look at the beautiful dog in the small bucket of water! I am pretty sure he/she is thinking: "There'd better be a VERY high value treat in store for this!!"

Snowbird Squirrel
 

This is a rarely seen NH snowbird squirrel now residing in South Florida.

Anyone know how to keep chipmumks out of the strawberries?.....I've tried moth crystals and dish soap......but they laugh at me as well as my lazy coon cats. Wouldn't mind sharing a few, but they take one or two bits out of half the crop.

It's a "Mix" with the Wild Critters...
 

If you keep a plastic grocery bag handy, just shake it noisily between both hands it few times. It makes a sound like some predator running fast through leafy woods, and scatters ALL the squirrels and chipmunks. The clever critters are fast learners, though, and I suspect they "catch on" after a few attempts. :rolleye2:

That said, chipmunks will do some good by snacking on the grasshoppers in your garden patch from time to time. :)

The odd part of their grasshopper-protein binge, is that they'll leave the grasshopper "drumsticks" behind. :confused:

Nothing beats a baby chipmunk for cute! :)
