Sandwich Fair
 

On Columbus Day weekend, I plan to take my family to the Sandwich Fair. I was wondering if people found this a fun time for younger kids (5 & 7 year olds)? Thanks in advance!

They will love the fair. Lots of rides on the midway, lots of food to eat and lots of farm animals to see ... bring lots of money.

They are a little older now (10/13) and still do. I guess its a "small" fair compared to the Topsfield or Fryeburg fairs, but that is OK for little ones. It is a great way to spend the day, especially when it is a beautiful (clear) fall day. We have gone in rainy weather in the past - not so much fun.

We have two boys, ages 4 and 8, and I don't understand how fairs are supposed to be affordable for the average family anymore. After admission for 4 people, tickets for rides, and purchasing food or whatever, it really adds up. ($5 for lemonade? $7 for cotton candy - you gotta be kidding!) We'd love to go to fairs more often but average one a year, at the most.

A trip to York Wild Animal Kingdom is less expensive and you can go to the beach as well...

They have a special for rides on Friday from 4-9(?) $10 unlimited. Some vendors are open for food. Also on Saturday similar deal for certain hours. Our rule was always no games (ripoff) unless they were spending their own $. It can get very pricey food wise, splitting orders was our solution. We each got to taste and less waste. Can't wait for the Fair.:)

You will have a great time at the fair- we started going when our kids were the same ages as yours. Seven years later they still enjoy it.

I know my daughter is in some kind of parade on Saturday at the fair (Moultonborough Central School), so that may be interesting for your kids.

Regarding Friday night, I do know that most of the area HS students tend to go then probably to take advantage of the ride deal, so keep that in mind (shockingly, my son no longer wants to go with us any more but with his friends from M'boro Academy!).

Finally, if the weather cooperates Francis Lord (retired NH State Police helicopter pilot) will likely have one of JBI's helicopters there giving rides, though I did hear that a neighbor may not have been thrilled about the noise last year. Hopefully he will be there, it was a great take and fabulous view with the foliage near peak.

I love the Sandwich Fair. It's good to see all the youngsters involved with all the different wholesome activities. I'm still on the search for the "perfect" sausage and peppers grinder. It used to be easier when they only cost 3 or 4 dollars. You could try a couple. Last year they were 6 bucks!

There is plenty to see and do without spending other than admission. Live bands,tractor pulls,horse shows,ox pulls, try to wear them out with that before you get to the rides.:laugh: Have Fun.

:laugh: It's the best time of the whole year next to Christmas Day!! Friday night is the best time to go, IMO - small crowd, all locals, cheap ride deal, and you don't get trampled by *insert your favorite tourist insult here* like you do Saturday or Sunday. The fair is great no matter your age - my parents are coming with us Friday night and are about to hit 70, my youngest is 7, and I'm thinking my dad and my little one will ride more rides than anyone else.:D

You're welcome to explain that to my kids... :D

(I can't blame them tho... I never met an amusement park ride I didn't love! And how do take kids to a place like that and then say "no"? It's just not in me. I waited a long time for them and yes, I do spoil them.)

I just love the 4-H barns. Checking out the canned pickle jar with the blue ribbon is just thrilling!

O.K. lets try, problem is I do not remember their name. Their right on the main paved walkway every year a stones throw from the bridge. I recall they have a red and white canopy around their trailer I believe. For some reason I always seem to end up there. Every year I must do a Sausage sandwich, Fries (at least ONE order) and when I'm really feeling hungry, which is most of the time a Bloomin Onion. :D

I have fond memories of the Sandwich Fair food! The sausage and pepper grinder was always my favorite along with those french fries you sprinkled salt and vinegar on. I'd have (my first order of) fries just as soon as I got there...early notwithstanding! Of course there were always those people who wanted to remind you how unclean those vendors could be...I turned a deaf ear! I just chowed down, and I'm still here! Would love to be having some of it this year. I'm just not into that alligator on a stick you see here at fairs and festivals.

Pulled pork . . . one year up next to the grandstand area (hate to describe like this, but pretty much behind the "flush" toilet building : /, he was from Vermont and boy was it good!

Hot or mild?
 

I like my sausage HOT! Nice fresh roll with plenty of peppers and onions. It doesn't hurt my feelings if there are fennel seeds in the sausage. Neither meat or veggies too well cooked. And plenty of napkins. I can't wait.

I agree, a real fresh soft roll make any sandwich. Don't like them even the least bit hard.

:( My kids want to ride all the rides all night tomorrow, and the weather is pretty iffy so far.

I am living for fried dough and soup in a bread bowl. A buffalo burger has potential, too! It's all about the food!!:liplick:

Went today and I broke down and did not get a sausage sandwich this year. Instead I split a very large steak and cheese with my wife. It was dripping grease and AWESOME! :eek: :D The fries and fried dough I was forced to try was also great. :laugh: I think my arteries are slowing as I type this post. :confused:

A balanced diet
 

As any nutritionist will tell you, the key to healthy living is a balanced diet. I rounded off my sausage sandwich with a custard filled eclair, and my arteries are doing fine!

Those monster eclairs? I eyed them a couple time through out the day. How were they?

ate the following at the fair Sunday...John's french fries, sausage pepper and onion sub, giant eclair, fried pickles, fresh lemonade and fried dough.

All delish...do we get a blue ribbon?

This year I tried the Buffalo Sausage. Oh man was it good. I was torn between the Buffalo Burger, Buffalo Steak and Cheese and I settled on the Buffalo Sausage. The meat almost had a sweeter taste to it. Really good. The fair was awesome and packed as usual on Sunday. :D

OMG, tomboymom, and he still worked today!!!! Amazing!

Sandwich Fair
 

It was a beautiful day and a light crowd at the Fair Monday. Foliage was a little further along then usual, golds still brilliant but most of the reds already past. I got my sausage and pepper grinder fix at Cathy's Place and it was one of the better ones I've had.

I went to the fair on Sunday - While good, its hard to believe they get $7 for a sausage, roll, and 1/4 cup of peppers & onions.. anyone else think that is kind of steep?

What is cheap at the fair? I bought my dog 3 milk bone biscuits with a dribble of frosting on them for 3.00 At home I get him a huge box of the same thing for 5.00 So who's the idiot? Wait, I am. :eek:

LOL.....You are a true NH native if you bring your dog to the fair; buy him 3 dog biscuits and then complain about the price you paid.

If you ever want to start a food concession at one of the fairs.....I recommend fried dough......paid $6 at Fryburg Fair......cost around .30
That's a 5% food cost compared to 34 to 40% at your local restaurant.

Samian: Why don't more restaurants offer more "fair" type food? You know fried dough, big sausage sandwich, Bloomin Onions? They already have the deep fryer in place. Just a thought, I would think it would be a big hit.

Aren't all fairs out of this world for prices. That's just part of the fun of going to a fair. They were like that 60 years ago when I was a kid. Ya the prices were cheaper, but so wasn't money hard to come by. My parents always seem to scrape up alittle extra for us kids to have one special thing.

dpg, how the heck did you get the dog into the fair. It seems everywhere I looked there was large signs saying defiantly no dogs allowed and do not leave them in your car. My friend got one of the people that they parked their car in the their yard to watch theirs and gave them $20 plus the $8 for parking.:)

No, no, I didn't bring my dog INTO the fair, he was at home. The treats came in a little bag with a ribbon on it. The ribbon did nothing for him. :laugh:
