Christmas Island Steak House....closed.

I know this might seem like it should be in the other forum but it is more about the economy...

I broke my normal tradition of the VK Saturday night Prime rib dinner and had gone to Lowes in Gilford instead. Needed to Christmas lights. So we (Kathy and I) decided to go to the Christmas Island Steak House instead, as VK would be closed by the time we got back. Sorry SAMIAM! We hadn't been there in a long time. Well upon entering the empty establishment (About 8pm) we learned that last night was their last night. Seems the economy, summer weather, etc was forcing an early closing of the place. We had a good talk with the waitress "Missy" and learned that some had gotten part time jobs at other places others had not. We felt bad. This economy is not doing anyone any favors for sure.
Anyway I left a her a $40.00 tip. I'm not rich but I hope it helped a bit seeing as there was no one else in there. And a rainy night to boot! Depressing to me. (The rib was great though.)

:(

Closed early for the season or closed for good?

BroadHopper 11-01-2009 09:50 PM

Christmas Island Steak House

is usually close during the week off season. The bar out back is usually open year round.

The bar side used to stay open year round. I can remember stumbling outta there years and years ago (off season.) Not a pretty site. No worries, I didn't drive home. :D;)

We forgive you, Lakesrider......actually, we have always liked the rib at Christmas Island and have been going there since the 70's. Tony and his crew work hard and are nice people....hope the closing is only seasonal.
That was so nice of you to help out that girl who is probably worried and struggling like many in this economy.

Drove by yesterday and the sign says "restaurant for lease" with a phone number.

Forgive my hijack here, but Donna Jean's sign says "on vacation".

To the best of my knowledge this is the first time either of these places closed in the winter.

Anyone know what's up?

BroadHopper 11-12-2009 10:55 AM

Talked to Tony

He says he will be gone on a badly needed vacation for a couple of months. He will be going to an undisclosed place for one month and going to another. He says he will be back to reopen the pub.

I think he deserves it. Running a place almost everyday for decades can be stressfull. Let him rest.

I double that............. Tony is a great guy, I've known him for many years. Love the rib when it's thrown on the grill for a minute on each side -- nobody does it like Tony!

Lakesrider 11-15-2009 07:46 PM

Ha. That is funny I just said to my Kathy I liked the rib thrown on the grill to sear it...
Talk about ESP!

Tony and Tommy Roux

Knew the boys since high school. My Dad use to work for Phil when he began building homes on the island. I will never forget hiding in Phil's boathouse from the MP one night. Everyone at Irwin's Garden made a bet one night that I wouldn't travel down the Weirs Channel full throttle in my Hydrostream with a 150SS. And there was an MP in the channel. Made $400 that night. I was so shakened up, I couldn't remember leaving the downstairs bar that night. Slept in the boat in the boathouse.

Me bad

Waterbaby and Broadhopper, I'll bet we all ran into each other in those days. Tony ran a great club....good bands in the downstairs bar....won a prize at his Halloween party one year.....then we'd work our way up to the Silver Lining Lounge and maybe the Depot for good measure.

Ah yes the Depot. That was the place to be on a Saturday night.;)

BroadHopper 11-16-2009 06:19 PM

Jeez!

If you hang at the Depot, and came from the Paugus Bay camping area, we might have met. I use to know a few people there through Tony. Memory is failing me as I can't recall any names..............

SAMIAM 11-17-2009 06:28 AM

If you remember anything......you weren't there.

glennsteely 11-17-2009 09:50 AM

going back....

We stayed at Christmas Island a few years back for the weekend, ate dinner 3 nights at the resturant because the place was great! Outstanding service and great food and drinks, (which we had quite a few of) good thing we were staying on site!!

The Depot used to be the place for local girls, girls, girls! :D:laugh: Used to get home from there 1-2 A.M. then get back up at 5 for a day of hunting. Wonder how many deer snuck right by as I napped under a tree.:laugh:
