Open water
What's with the open water showing on the Weirs Cam? Is it due to bubblers near the docks? The area seems to have expanded over the past few weeks.

Just like the return of your wealthy neighbors from South Carolina, those deteriorating ice edges and bigger open water around the dock water circulators are an early announcement that warmer weather is not too far away.....or something like that.....time will tell?
February 19.....what the heck....it just never gets cold enough around here on February 19 for no ice or no snow.......no way....no how! This is New Hampshire! Think I'll go for a spin on my bicycle and try to sneak up on a moose....what....you think I'm kidd'n.... |
Thin Ice
I have been at the lake all week hoping to get some snomobiling in. I have seen the ice/open water deliniation moving more to the open water side over the past 7 days. The sun is getting stronger everyday. That along with the warmer temps the ice thickness has reached it maxium and is now starting to contract.
BTW i got zero time in snowmobiling:emb: |

Head north!
Head North Hazelnut! I hear the trails are great in Pittsburgh (as usual!) :)

The ice has retreated at least 50 feet in the last five days where we are in Meredith Bay. In addition, if you look at the lake temp you will see that it is 2 degrees warmer than it was last year at this time. Bottom line is approximately 60 days till the boat goes in. :):D:cool:

Some warm days ahead for the next week.
Starting with tomorrow, Saturday, www.noaa.gov predicts Meredith NH 03253 will have daytime highs of 41-36-40-37-38-38-37 for the next seven days with some chance of either snow or rain on Thurs-Fri. What month is this......is it really February? |
I've been wondering about this too. Seeing the edges moving on some of the cams. Water temp on Black Cat seeming to be higher than normal at this time of year.
I figured it might have to do with the lack of snow cover letting in more sunlight than it would if the ice were covered. Anyone know for sure? |
Ice retreat
I was in Merrymeeting cove on the 13th of Feb. and was surprised to see water approaching the beach I thought it was kind of early. and at the boat ramp in Peggy's cove it looked kind of soft. perhaps that is why there was only one truck on the ice in that area. A year ago there was forty or fifty trucks on the ice. Gee and my boat was sitting on the pad and had no snow on it. It's getting to look a lot like spring all around the lake, with a dab of water here, and a dab of water there oh we'll all be boating soon.

The warm weather is definitely taking its toll on the ice. During the day today another 100' of shoreline has opened up from our shoreline to about 30' out. Boating could be sooner than you think. :D:)

The water temperature of the lake was 36 degrees yesterday and is 37 degrees today. Just checked last year and noted that the temp did not hit 37 degrees until the end of March.

Due Diligence....
The ice out process has begun, much earlier than one would expect. Several trucks, ATV's and actually ice shacks fell through the ice today on Sebago Lake in Maine during the annual ice fishing derby forcing the cancellation of the second day tomorrow for safety reasons. Sebago is a large lake with some areas much wider and longer than Winnipesaukee although Winnie encompasses more square miles. The lions share of Sebago never froze this year which happens 3 out of every 10 years. The only thing that will slow the ice out process will be snowcover which may just happen this coming week.
Please be safe out there!! BT |
I was surprised to see so many vehicles on the lake Saturday. There was lots of open water in Meredith Bay but these trucks were still out there.

Here are three shots from Satuday. One showing open water and vehicles on ice in Center Harbor, the other two of our shore in Tuftonboro. Granted, a lot of the open water was created by the bubblers surrounding the town docks and Mount in Center Harbor, and by bubblers along our shore. The side facing the north along our shore was pretty much all iced in, as evidenced by the last photo.

The bubblers on the East side of Alton Bay are intruding on the airstrip. I saw a couple of planes on the ice Sunday, but they sure got close to the open water!
|
The sure has opened up in the last - 5 days. Just took a spin to Meredith to plow the driveway and noticed that the edge of the ice is now well over 150' away from my shoreline. As well, the shoreline on our street is all opened up. Last Sunday we had 400 feet of open shoreline and now have well over 1000 feet. Boating season cannot get here fast enough. :):D
