Water Temperature

The water temperature is up to 37° today. It didn't hit 37° last year until the end of March. 2008 it didn't hit that until the middle of April. I hope this means early ice-out! I can't wait to get back to the lake.

Be careful out there!

hancoveguy 02-24-2010 11:29 AM

Amen to that... cummon spring!

Resident 2B 02-24-2010 12:21 PM

Looking at the recent weather history out of Concord, the closest weather station that reports such data, we have been above normal everyday since Feb 7th. That is 17 days in a row now. Looking at what the temperatures have averaged in this 17 day period, it has been more like what the temperatures should be in early to mid-March.

Looking at the forecast, this above average run looks to be continuing for the foreseeable future. There will be a windy period Friday and the effects from the wind on the open edges will be key to how quickly the lake opens up this spring.

The water is warm, the air is warm and the winds are coming. All point to a real early ice out, in my opinion. Even if we get a March cold spell, the March sun is strong and the winds are usually up, so if the edges start to open up, the sun and the winds will do their job eating up the ice.

It would be nice to have an early spring!

Yes please be very careful out on the ice. It seems to me there have been more vehicles than usual go through the ice on all the lakes this season.

codeman671 02-24-2010 03:07 PM

Looking back at the last few years, we have not had 37 degrees even close to this early. In 2006 when we had an early April ice-out the temp still did not hit 37 until mid march.

It is too early to be excited but it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Merrymeeting 02-24-2010 03:58 PM

With above freezing temps during the days, not much below at night, a too-late insulating blanket of snow that will now keep the "heat" in the lake eating away at the ice from underneath, I hope all will start retreating from the ice pronto.

I have to believe it will become increasingly unsafe over the next few weeks, and with all the dustings of snow in the forecast, it will be impossible to tell.

Stay safe everyone.

The ice in Moultonborough Bay looks like it is changing fast! Will that bob house make it off the ice in time???
Alton Bay is looking very slushy.

I agree with RG, if not late March ice out I don't think right now it'll last past the first few days of April. Need to get the boat ready,if only the rain would stop.

Took this photo when I was out on Wolfeboro Bay in a Zodiac this morning with one of my friends.

I wonder what the water temperatures are? They haven't been posted for a few days now.

The ice in Meredith Bay is looking very thin!!! :D

Still 37° RG.

If I miss a temp. posting you can get the current water temp. from CanisLupusArctos's weather page, although today his reading is higher than at the dam.

Winnipesaukee Data Phone

I also keep the data phone number in my cell phone, so any time I'm wondering.... (which is almost all the time) I can call...

They usually update it around 7am.

I'm psyched about the ice melting! Bring on the Sun!

(As an aside, the Black Cat website is really great!)

Thank you Don for the reminder of CLA's web page. I completely forgot about his temps.

Thanks for the great pictures JP. Wolfeboro Bay is looking great

Nice pictures

and who knew??? My Ice-Out guess of April 12th will be way too late! I would have been especially happy about that back when I lived up there...and I didn't even have a boat!

Open water in the middle of the lake

Hi all,

I climbed up to the cell phone tower this morning next to Gunstock (weekly exercise) and there are areas of open water in the middle of the lake. In addition, it is over 50 degrees today. On the mountain, some of the trees are already budding. So, it is going to happen quite soon.

According to the chart in this website, a water temperature of 39 was reached yesterday.....which is more than one month ahead of last year......well.....good golly!

Have to wonder if springtime will be warm & dry up to May 15, and then as in the last three years, depress down into a wet & cool pattern from May 15 to August 15.......ugh?

Nope. The Farmer's Almanac says a cool but dry summer. They've been accurate so far this year. They predicted a lot of snow for the mid-atlantic this year, and well, it happened.

I would guess that we will have a cooler than normal spring, Mid April through May with April snows in the mts.

Lakesrider 03-18-2010 10:02 AM

The ice has turned that very gray color. Definitely won't be long.....

Now will the Black fly season be early as well?:(

Chubbs 03-18-2010 02:29 PM

You can definatly count on those pesky black flies to be ahead of schedule. Get those wet leaves raked up before they hatch. If you don't they will sworm all over you. They can really ruin a nice day at the lake.
