Anyone know the approximate date of the arrival of the hummers? Our feeder is filled and we're anxiously awaiting them!

Mothers Day seems to be the time.

Me too. I have had them as early as mid April in the past.

By now they are usually dive bombing me to get the feeder up. Soon, very soon.

you need to try to bear proof the feeders.

Migration maps!
 

If you go to hummingbirds.net and click on their link to their migration maps you can see that they have been seen up in Canada already! They have been here in CT for two weeks now.

Can the Orioles Be Far Behind?
 

I am in anticipation of the return of the Orioles, as well. Every day I listen for their call and look for a bright flash of orange in the tree top. They usually make their appearance around mid May but thought they might be a wee' bit earlier this year, as everything seems to be two weeks ahead of schedule.

I put mine up last Sunday here in North Central Mass, and still no takers. I usually see them before I put the feeder up. Just have to be patient, I guess!

For some reason, we haven't seen any in our yard which is just west of Philadelphia and we should have seen them by now. Feeders have been up for the past two weeks (nectar changed every 4/5 days). We have had some real warm weather too.

We first saw this young male 2 days ago, so we left the camera at the ready.

I thought I had posted this the other day, but obviously not :rolleye1:. I cleaned the feeders and put them out on Thursday, and Friday evening we looked out and had a Hummer at the feeder. We thought we had seen one where we hang the feeders about a week earlier, but it was such a quick glance, we weren't sure.

You're never "too old" until you can't swing the clubs... golf clubs. :laugh:

Had a female arrive this morning about 8:00AM. She looked a little cold out there.

Are you sure it was a female? It might have had a shrunken "club" from the cold.:laugh:

Put up my feeder yesterday and there was a hummingbird at the feeder already today when I got home from work. So they are around......:D

Had a male in my garden on Saturday and I haven't even put out the feeder yet, Melvin Village area.

I put my hummingbird feeders up last evening and 5 minutes later I had hummingbirds at both feeders.

Hopefully OK to post a link to a youtube video I found about a hummingbird.

I had a few birds at my feeder yesterday but did not see any today. Maybe time to change the fluid in the bottle?

I know the raccoons like it, because I caught one trying to drink out of it last night...Argh!

Our H Birds typically sit on the perches to drink. Today RG noticed that they were hovering. On closer inspection she noticed that all the perches had been broken off and most of liquid removed. Now the quest to find out what new animal we have on the island.

Caught this one tonight at the feeder. It chased away another one as I getting ready to take the firsts ones picture...

Celia took this on our deck at the lake last week with her new flip share camera. After seeing the one that Don has I tried to buy one for work but it was immediately commandeered for a higher purpose.

I have a little problem and was hoping somebody out there might have a suggestion. For the first time I am using a "shepherd's hook" to hang my hummingbird feeders. It didn't take long before it attracted ants. I sprayed it and that eliminated the problem but I don't want to use chemicals around the birds or the shrub at the base of the hook. If anybody has a non-toxic solution I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks.

We have our hummingbird feeder on a sheperd's hook and use Tanglefoot to keep the ants out.

Ant trap that works
 

We made a successful ant blockade.

1) Cut the bottom off of a plastic cup (about an inch high)

2) Heat a metal shish kabob skewer

3) Pass the hot skwer through the bottom of the plastic cup.

4)Bend a hook on the straight end of the skewer.

5) Put a little epoxy on the dry side of the joint.

6) add some water to the moat and enjoy the ant frustration.

Very devious RGuy. I can only imagine what you do to keep trespassers of the island!

Probably something similar to the perimeter guard in that movie "Congo", only with water guns and balloons.:eek::laugh::look:
