Did you try to tickle it's toes?
My son and I had a run-in with a bear on 28A this Summer when he was mowing a neighbor's yard. It was eating berries across the street and someone in a pickup stopped and yelled at it to get it back in the woods but it paid him no heed and continued to eat. Eventually it moved on, but it was clearly going where it wanted. My son thought it would be nice if I stuck around while he mowed.
DRH, I wouldn't walk alone in the woods in West Alton for a while. I think that bear got a good look at you.
