That testing was of laser technology and was done at night. This thread is the first reference I can recall to ductwork and a refrigerator in that area. (The refrigerator may be unrelated—it could have floated in).

2) Maybe all those 100' stretches of aluminum pipe are to move silt-laden water away that would stirred up by the activity in the area. (?)

Running air bubbles through it would create the necessary current. Weights spaced at strategic locations would be needed to keep the ductwork functioning.
