Only one Christmas memory
in the Lakes Region stands out in my mind. When my kids were babies, and my sister's kids were babies, and we were married to brothers, we had Christmas at the old homestead out in East Wolfeboro. Our parents and grandparents and little sister came up from Mass. There were many card tables set up for the little ones, and there was a wood stove right there in the dining room. The house was huge, and had wide pine floors. We retired to the living room for dessert, and there was a huge fireplace in there.
It had been snowing most of the day, so we all, minus the older folks, bundled up and went sledding on the front lawn. The next day was, of course, cold, clear and windy. The snow was up to the dormers, so we went sledding again, only this time out the bedroom windows.
A few years later, we had Christmas at our house in Gilford.
I wish I owned that house in East Wolfeboro. I drove by it when I was up there in September. $$$$$ now, for sure. I don't have that many good memories of living there, but I suppose that Christmas, when there were so many of us and 4 generations, was the best.
