I know why Apple picked AT&T and it was for the reason that AT&T has the largest customer base for a true G3 network. Most wireless providers are residual of the AT&T breakup and others have been consumed by AT&T via mergers. Verizon cannot do data and voice at the same time and is not a true G3 network - unlocked or jailbroken iPhones on the Verizon network do not do that well.
