Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but if I don't pay my property taxes in your example, at some point, the town will seize the property for non-payment and eventually auction it off for the taxes due. So no, it's not your responsibility. If I have to pay a tax, I still prefer a tax
based on one's ability to pay.
