An asteroid coming right at the earth is scary. Given the statistics, driving should be the scariest thing we all do, but somehow we're not scared when we drive.
As for early iceout, it's actually fascinating when you study the science behind it all. Then you see that the ice froze right on average, got thick enough for human activity earlier than average, got thick enough to support widespread truck usage for a time, and yet still melted extremely early.
The science behind it all will tell you there is a lot more to ice-in and ice-out than temperatures. There are many factors. Their timing and order plays a huge role. That's what makes the iceout guessing contest such a huge attraction.
